Thread: Lap Band and GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease

  1. Default Lap Band and GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease

    Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me how GERD can effect me once I have my Lap Band surgery? I was recently diagnosed with it and I am kind of nervous because at times I feel like the food it coming back up... and with the small band opening I am scared it could be worse. I would appreciate any help or experiences you may have had. Thanks

Not sure myself, but I know we have several here who have GERD. I think the weight loss has helped. I know they will chime in.

the band can actually help reduce GERD symptoms, the band acts to help prevent contents of the stomach going back up as long as you are not too tight or eat too big a meal etc. I found a dramatic improvement in symptoms post op initially then unfortunately things got a bit rough again but that just required a revision of the the amount of fluid in the band and also how well i was following the rules. i have gone back to taking somac daily but i have swallowing probs due to MS that increase the risk of Gerd so the med is an added precaution

Well I'm not sure I officially had GERD, but I had heartburn every day of my life! The gastroentrologist put me on Nexium, which helped. Before that, I was eating taking Pepcid 2-3 times a day.

Since I have had the band, I haven't had heartburn at all - not once.

Ok for me the band actaully caused me to have it. :( I guess I have to be different. Anyway I take prevacid twice a day and it helps. I had to get on carafate (sp) over the summer it helped and I am all good now. So everyone is so different!

being too tight will give me horrible reflux at night. I never had any problems before being banded and it resolves itself if I get a slight unfill.

It has caused me Gerd too. I got filled a long while ago and have had backup ever since. I keep thinking it will chill if I lose more weight. Instead I am spinning at the same ten pounds now forever. And meanwhile the gerd has got worse and worse. Thanks for posting this thread. I am going to go back for an unfill and get this dangerous situation stopped.

The unfill should help. Are you taking medication. My doctor has me on a protonic and it works well.

    Good luck.
