Cool Go to gym or workout at home?

I am debating on whether to buy a gazelle power plus for cardio and toning for my home to work out everyday or join a gym that I will go to 3-4 times a week. I am just starting to get back into exercise after surgery. I have been walking but not as much as I should. I need to do something to get in my exercise. I was thinking working out at home would save me money because I have to drive 30 minutes to the gym and 30 minutes back plus the cost of the gym. But there is more to use at the gym...ugh. I hate this confusion. I was thinking if I had the gazelle power plus right here at home I would use it everyday as opposed to going to gym 3-4 times a week. I also would not give up walking outside when the weather is nice no matter which one I do. What do you think?

i may not be the best person to ask as I cannot use most home excerise equipment and cannot access the average gym- I would love both options, personally, I would love the support of an excercise partner- I work better if I have someone else who I mutually depend on for motivation, support etc. Would you use the gazelle if it were there, would you go to the gym because you have paid for the membership?? which is most likely for you??

I do both. I have some equipment here at home but I also use some of the equipment at the gym. Since I do both I got a gym membership to a place that just has the basics and it is $19 per month.

I go to the gym mostly, but gym is a little closer than your's. I also do some DVDs at home too. I tend to work a little harder at the gym though.

I just dumped my gym membership when I bought an elliptical. Now I used my treadmill and elliptical at home with my free weights. I liked both, but it was getting harder for me to make it to the gym.

Where do you think you will stay the most motivated? If the drive and the whole hassle of going to the gym would eventually put you off then home BUT if being at the gym means you're likely to work more then give it a go. Why not get a short membership to the gym for starters and if it doesnt suit then invest in equipment???

I've always loved the gym, never lacked motivation to go there. But I struggled time wise and the fact that I'd be out of the house, go the gym, have to go home to shower, change and do my hair and then go BACK out to do all my stuff down at the shops, it'd take 3/4 of the day, and as my child free time is meant to be for study, that was a problem for me. I could never go at night or in the afternoon because of the kids and the fact that Doug is never home till 7.30pm or so.

I had a lightbulb moment at the start of being banded where I realised I was just going to *have* to include walking as part of my exercise program (I find walking very boring, hate it unless its with company). I told myself over time I could begin to run again as I have always loved running, why its different to walking I have no idea but it just is. So I started.

I surprised myself at being able to run 3km first off, so that was that, I ditched the gym membership. We bought a treadmill about a month after I started and I have never looked back. I've never in my life been as consistent as I have, with the treadmill as back up I have no excuse. Doug is away on a boys fishing trip for the next 8 days so I cant go out for a run and leave Eliza at home, so I'll use the treadmill, and its coming up winter here, daylight savings has finished, so I'll be using it more now anyway.

Best thing I ever did because I've never had these kinds of results either.

I miss the gym because I really feel I should be doing more strength work and its jsut so much easier with proper gym equipment. And I'd love love love to do an occasional spin or boxing class too. So I am thinking of joining again when finances permit. But the backbone of my exercise program can be done at 5am or 11pm, in rain hail or shine without leaving home and that makes a huge difference.

personally, i go to curves 3 times a week - but keep telling myself i need to take advantage of the great gym we have here in my complex in the mornings.

so, i say pick whichever you will be more apt to take advatange of! for me, even though the apt. complex's gyn is more convenient in location - i need to go to the gyn before i ever come home - bc once i'm home, i get involved in 500 other things that need to be done.

    just my 2 cents!!!

it really depends on what is going to make you do it more. for me i like to workout at home, but i have a membership too for the pool and the equipment i just can't get at home.

something to keep in mind for a gym membership... when you do the same workout all the time your body gets used to it, and you do not burn as much as you should or could. variety works really well to keep your metabolism high and your body in shape.

I called some gyms around my area. The closest one is 30 minutes away. I thought the new one opened but it hasn't yet. We may move in July and if we move I will have to pay a cancellation fee at the one gym and transfer it to another one and pay a transfer fee. Way too much money that I just don't have right now unfortunately. I would love to belong to a gym. I am going to order my gazelle power plus and start with that. I figure since I am not working out with any equipment, something is better than nothing and I will continue to walk...which I need to more of. After we move...if we do, I will join a gym. If we decide to stay after july I will join the gym 30 minutes away, but first things first...ordering the home equipment.

Thanks to everyone for your response and input.
