Hypnosis is often perceived as something very mysterious and weird, and in most cases it is almost completely misunderstood.
When most people think of hypnosis, they think of Stage Show Hypnosis where people are brought on stage, made to bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken and when they wake upĒ they donít remember what they did. This is the stereotypical view of hypnosis.
While Stage Hypnosis is real, and does work, it is a highly specialized type of hypnosis that only works on a small percent of the population. Stage show hypnotists know how to test their audience and select only highly suggestible people whose minds will easily and readily accept suggestions. However, most people are not highly suggestible, which is why many believe that they cannot be hypnotized.
In contrast, clinical hypnosis works on 97% of the population because it is a natural state of relaxation that most people experience on their own each and every day.
Because the Subconscious Mind does not have the ability to use reason and logic, which is necessary for self-preservation, the Conscious Mind must filter out potentially dangerous information. Therefore, the conscious mind has a very stout protection system in place, which is called the Critical Factor. The Critical Factor is made up filters such as judgment, skepticism, critical thinking, and common sense. These filters keep information out of the Subconscious Mind until it is proven positive and safe.
In order for information to be proven positive and safe and, therefore, allowed to enter the subconscious mind, that information must be repeated over and over and over again. This repetition demonstrates to the Critical Factor that the information is positive and that it accomplishes desired results. Once the information reaches the Subconscious Mind, it becomes a permanent habit.
Now, if you think about it, this is how we traditionally learn. When we first attempt to do something new, it can be awkward and challenging, but with each attempt it becomes easier, and over time it becomes so simple that we can do it in our sleep.
Getting information past the Critical Factor can take a very long time.
Hypnosis helps speed up that process. As you relax, your conscious thoughts will start to wander. So, consciously you stop paying attention to the world around you and your Subconscious Mind moves forward to handle everything for you. Because the Critical Factor is part of your Conscious Mind it also relaxes and suggestions are allowed to flow through much easier and faster, and then change can happen quickly and naturally, sometimes without you even knowing.
The more you relax and allow yourself to drift off during hypnosis, the better it works.
Hypnosis is pretty much the opposite of normal learning. With normal learning you want to pay attention, focus, and memorize because you want to consciously use whatever it is that you're learning, whether itís for work, school, a test, or a hobby.
But think about this. What if you lost all of your excess weight, became perfectly healthy, enjoyed eating all the right foods in the right amounts, had an active lifestyle that you really enjoyed, you looked good, you felt good, and you didn't really know how it all came about, it just sort of happened as you went through the hypnosis program? Would that bother you? That would be great wouldn't it? Well, thatís how hypnosis works.
With hypnosis we bypass the conscious learning centers in your brain and go straight in to the Subconscious Mind where knowledge and habits reside.
It is important to understand that not all hypnosis programs are created equal. Hypnosis is simply the tool to reach the Subconscious Mind. The magic is in understanding how the mind works and creating suggestions that your mind will respond to and easily and naturally accept.
As I said in my last article, diets and our society have it all wrong. For the last 5 years I have worked with hundreds of clients and have discovered that the way our society and diets try to work with the mind is virtually backwards. I have crafted a program using suggestions and processes that work WITH your mind rather than against it. These processes, combined with hypnosis, have helped people naturally and easily achieve a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.
In my next article Iíll discuss Diet Mentality, expose how itís backwards to the way your mind actually works, and give some conscious level coaching on how to begin working with your mind instead of fighting against it.
Yours in good health,
