Hey guys,

I am newly banded (yeah!) and I just got home from the hospital yesterday. I didn't eat for 3 days while in the hospital and yet when I got home...no weight loss!

Is this weight from my IV that I was on for almost 3 days (the fluids and such)?

Did this happen to anyone else?

How long until you started seeing the loss?

Thanks!

Hi Jennifer -
Congrats on the new band! Hope you're doing ok with your recovery. Not to worry --- it will come off! You could be just retaining fluids from surgery. You're still going to be swollen and sore. Hang in there and follow those post op rules. I lost tons of weight during the pre and post op diet! Best of luck to you.

Hey Jen! WELCOME to Band-Land.

During that first post-op month, I can remember checking the scale after EVERY trip to the bathroom! The major difference was in the AM though - It was probably a week before I noticed a BIG change. Have you have a BM yet? That should drop the scale a bit. Gross, but true!
As often as possible, take brief walks - this will also help your body pass all those toxins!

Good luck!

Welcome to Bandland Jen!

Yup, coming home with some extra poundage is very normal. I came home with my new band and an 8 pound gain! Eeek!

But not to worry, as Kim said its just fluid retention from the surgery and the IV and it will come off in a few days.

Be sure to sip lots and lots of water. It's easy to become dehydrated during this time of recovery. Walk all you can -- the more you move the better you'll feel. And try not to worry about weight loss right now. This is your healing time. Time for your band to get settled in and for your body to adjust to the change. As you go through the post-op diet phases you'll probably see some drastic weight loss and also some small gains as you progress to solid foods again. But once you get your first fill, the weight loss should level out to a nice 1-2 pound loss per week.

Again, grats on your band! Keep us posted on your progress! I hope you have before pics, if not.. get some NOW!

*hugs*

Thanks gals for your words of encouragement! I haven't had a BM yet. Is that normal? I can't even barely push out a fart at this point :p nice huh?

I have been walking....glad to know this will speed things up. I'm ready to be back to my old active self!

Yep - that's normal! I finally took Milk of Magnesia (I think that's what it was). I was stopped up for a while until I did that - yikes! I remember that the day I took the laxative, my toilets stopped up and backed up into the showers and tubs. Then the laxative kicked in. Waiting for the plumber to arrive was AWFUL!

Keep yourself moving. Go for little walks. It will help some.

yep - me too, Kim - I had to take MOM for the first week's voiding.... I think its normal to be constipated post surgery. Glad you mentioned the MOM - I had forgotten about it. :)

Jen - check with your surgeon FIRST before getting some MOM, k?

When I had my surgery I had a huge gain form the IV's. totally normal, it takes a week or so to relieve itself. Not to worry.

If I could go back I'd have sipped some MOM. I still get the occasional constipation bout, and it helps alot. But post-surgery, oh yeah. Constipation is normal. Keep hydrated. You'll be posting in no time "OMGosh! I lost a BUNCH!" and you'll feel ooohhhhhhhh so much better after a few good BM's. Let us know, really! How many places can you go to get good cheerleading regarding your bowel activity?!

Hahaa, that's cute Kathy. I have gone 6 days without a BM, I took a laxitive last night and...nothing. I'm going to call the surgeon today also because there is a huge bump about 2 inches below where my IV was....that darn IV!
