I have been reading all the posts and it seems clear that carbonation in sodas, beer, etc doesn't work well with the band. What happens? Does it hurt? I ask because I have a serious diet coke addiction I am going to have to kick before being banded. Last time I tried to kick it I was a raving BI**H! (LOL, you can ask my hubby and sons!)
Thanks,
Jane:sun_smiley:

Hi Jane! Carbonation can hurt, and also stretch ur pouch. I drank diet caffeine free pepsi every single day for as long as i can remember. i haven't had one in 5 months, and i don't miss it at all. no worries! you will be fine!
and if i haven't said so already...welcome to B2G!!!

Took a swig of Ginger ale this morning to take some meds. OMG! Big mistake. But as kristina has said, you will not miss it...much.

I miss my Fresca. I took a tiny sip of my husband's....I can tell its a bad idea. I seem to be happy substituting Crystal light tangerine/strawberry for Fresca though....I think it might be good with rum. ahem...not that I would EVER drink any rum or anything though!

I'm with Kris (I usually am!) on this: I was a serious diet coke addict who was very concerned about having to give them up post-band. It was NOT a big deal at all... for one thing, I was on pain killers for several days after the surgery - so any addiction side effects were taken care of by the meds :) About 3 months post-surgery I took a sip of my daughter's diet coke (I was thirsty!) - Yuck!! Really, it didn't taste good at all.
Crystal Light Iced Tea is my replacement...
Good luck!

I am usually with Lyn too!
so i found a drink...christie i think mentioned it. we are both in colorado so i dont know if anywhere else has it...its the best water beverage i have had since i got banded. its called FUZE slenderize. it has 20 calories in the whole thing...and vitamin C, chromium, citrimax an carnitine. its sooooo good! it only has 5mg of sodium which is awesome in the flavored water world...and only 1 sugar gram. and the taste is wonderful. i have blueberry. yummy.

I was a diet Coke junky also smoked. Kicked both the habits, smoking 6 months before surgery. Diet coke after surgery, it caused my stomach to hurt, and made me belch. If I really want a coke, I pour it in a glass and stir it until all the carbonation is gone let it sit and enjoy.

I'm now on the trail to get banded, and I also had that question about carbonation. Currently, I do like a few beers (lo cal) a couple of times a week. So, I'm guessing the options would be to switch to wine or liquer or become a "tee-totaler"(NOT!). (Of course all things in moderation.) I like sodas, but don't think that will be a big problem to give up.
Thanks for the good topics and posts.

I was wondering the same thing - I have a serious Diet CHERRY Coke addiction, but the good news is, I love them frozen (found this out by happy accident) and slushy - and therefore no bubbles! Kinda like the old slurpee cherry/coke machine. Yum! I'm hoping it'll agree with my new tummy.

The trying-to-be-better-to-my-body part of my brain is actually looking forward to a reason to give up the fake sweetener and caffeine... so, maybe this is a win-win.

I drank very little carbonation for two years, maybe the occasional taste of beer and champagne. Lately I've been being bad. I know people who still drink a ton of Diet Pepsi and have no trouble losing weight. My doc would probably kill me if he saw me posting this, but I'm drinking a Pepsi Max right now! I had a sip of one of these things and now I can't stop!

I agreee with Kristina- most of the time, if I do transgress, it is by accident. (i.e. I forget, or there are no other choices.) I had a 2-3 Diet drinks a day habit, and I have adapted without missing it at all. I drink water, use the sugar-free Koolaid single water bottle packs sometimes, do tea on occassion, and have discovered Minute Maid Light Lemonaid and Tropicana Light Orangeaid in the can. Those Orangeaids are YUM. 5 calories and many times they take the place of a snack for me...

Kristina, at least Starbucks isn't carbonated! LOL!
I was so good for over 2 years, I don't know why I suddenly started drinking them. Of course, it is nothing like before. I was drinking 3 2-liters a week plus at least a 12 pack of bottles. That's not even counting what I would pick up on the run! I could never drink that much now, I would be in pain!

Hi Jane, just catching up with your thread!
Me no likie carbonation! Was hooked for years, Diet Coke, never dreamed I would ever stop drinking it. Wouldn't if you paid me now!
I drank it after being banded but as I got tighter and tighter, no go...
I drink lots of Crystle light tea, mostly Raspberry and any kind of water with flavor, not much on plain water..
When are you getting banded.
Good to get to know you!
Welcome!
