I know that this is a good question for a nutritionist. But there are so many experts here, thought I would ask. During the healing process I know we drink our protein via shakes, protein shots, etc. But say 6 weeks out, is it ok to drink my proteins instead of getting it through food? The powder I use now (and hopefully will be able to tolerate after I am banded) has 48 grams per serving with 5 grams of carbs. If I can get down 2 servings per day that's about 100 grams. Should I worry about having to eat chicken or tuna? I mix the protein in water, so 2 servings of the powder will also give me 32 oz. of water a day. It's like killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

Protein continues to be a big issue. Should we have our protein in liquid form or in the form of food?? Everyone has their opinion and there are differening schools of thought on the issues when you search the web. The one thing that is certain is that we definitely need lots of protein for good health--especailly after WLS. Go the nutrition thread and spend some time looking through the different threads, I picked out a few that might be of interest....
Here are a few threads/posts that speak to the protein issue.....

Thanks Newlife. These are helpful. And BTW-I went to GNC at lunch today to check out the Dessert protein and the guy told me that it is being discontinued. But he sounded a little unsure. I think he meant that GNC will discontinue as it isn't a big seller for them. He did say that.

Hi,
As Mel pointed out, there's certainly lots of discussion around protein drinks. My doc wants me to get most of my protein from "real foods". It's hard for me to get the 70-80 grams a day solely from meats/eggs, etc, though. So I usually have a protein drink (fat-free milk and Unjury) to jump start the day and get a quick 28 grams.
Also, if I'm craving something mid-meal, I'll fix 4 oz of ff milk and 1/2 scoop of protein powder - the protein staves off the hunger and I get a bonus 14 grams of protein for about 110 calories :)
I'll often also add unflavored protein to things that can absorb/hide it. For example, I'll add a TBS of protein powder to SF pudding if I have it for a snack... or add it to SF applesauce.
Basically, I sneak in protein powder when possible just because it's a reliable source of protein on days when I may be running short.

Its by body fortess and is sold at Target and Walmart. I have seen 3 flavors-Choc., Van., and cookies and cream. I like the chocolate. I put 1 scoop in the blender with a banana, ice, pb granola bar and some equal. Pretty filling. On occasion when I want it thicker I add sf pudding mix. I am not banded but keeps me full for 3 hrs, sometimes more.

Mine is Body Fortress Super Advances Whey Protein...
1 scoop
cal - 110
total fat - 2g
total carb - 3g
sugars - 2g
PROTEIN - 26g
2 scoops
cal - 220
total fat - 3.5g
total carb - 7g
sugars - 3g
PROTEIN - 52g
I get it at Walfart and I've seen it in Van, Choc, Straw, Cookies and Cream, and Fruit Punch. I like Choc and Straw - then Vanilla to me tastes like sin and I haven't tried the others.
I add mine to 8oz of Simply Smart FF milk which gives another 10g of Protein. I only use 1 scoop of powder per shake. I don't ever replace a meal with a shake (for breakfast I add cottage cheese or yogurt or oatmeal and fruit to the shake), I use a shake for a snack and I use a shake after the gym, and like Lyn if I didn't do so great with my solid protein intake for the day.
Gotta run my kiddo is OPENING the protein powder container lol that I was reading from! - Ok he said it looks like sand lol... Also wanted to say most people from my chubby center use Unjury and swear by it. I tried some choc and van from them and I didn't like the taste or consistency. But I'm a minority I think.

I have this same protein powder Shelly.. and you say you never use it for a meal replacement? I guess I'm afraid to use it as a snack, but then again when I snack the snack I choose would have more calories than this. Why can't I get my mind wrapped around this? It sounds so simple to do, yet I don't .. dang it.. please either nudge me or get a shovel for my head. :)

:) Donna, do you know what about using it as a snack makes you nervous? Is it the calories? When you want a snack is it because you're truly hungry or do you find you're bored or looking for a certain taste?

Personally, I like to chew my snack and that is why I don't go for the drinks. Also, because I have to take lactose pills because of the milk in them. I hate to do that. Sometimes the pills don't work enough.
