What is erosion?

I know what a slipped band is but what about erosion. I mean i know erosion means something is desolving but how does that work with the band? How long before erosion starts? I have read some threads and it sounded as the band completely erroded after a yr. How long will the band last inside? 3 yrs, 10 yrs., 20 or more?

From what I know it to be, erosion is when the band "erodes" into you stomach. I have seen pictures and instead of the band being outside the stomach, part of it (or all of it) starts to wear it's way into the flesh of the stomach and the flesh (for lack of a better term) grows over it.

From what I can tell, erosion was much more of an issue with the older model bands, which had more rigid edges. As far as how long a band is meant to last inside, my surgeon told me forever but like any other man made device there is the chance that at some point it will malfunction or break, and a new one will need to be put in.
