View Full Version : Say hello to the Hula Hoop!

I was talking about hooping in another thread and didn’t want to thread jack so I’m making this thread!

First things first I got into hooping after attending “The maker faire (http://makerfaire.com/)”.
Hoopcircle (http://www.hoopcircle.com/HoopCircle/Welcome.html) was there doing a demo and I was instantly hooked!
I then ran out and bought me a roll of irrigation pipe and many colors of electrical tape and started making my own hoops.

Physical Benefits of Hoop dance:
· Builds core strength
· Tones your entire body
· Provides an intense cardiovascular workout
· No to Low Impact
· Increases energy
· Develops balance and coordination
· Increases flexibility

Mental/Emotional Benefits of Hoop dance:
· Clears and quiets the mind
· Reduces stress
· Improves self confidence
· Generates joy and laughter
· Improves one's mood
· Opens up creative self expression

There’s a hoop revolution video that is pretty cool at http://www.thehoopinglife.com/
It talks about how hooping a can help with depression and how hooping increases your sex drive.

For the ones that want to know the numbers here is a site that tells you an estimate of calories burned. http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-burn-one-hour-hula-hooping-q1781

Heavy hoops are weighted hoops. I weight mine with sand. There are DIY heavy hoop sites too, but I suggest you begin with a normal empty hoop because you can get bruised hooping especially when you first start.

There are great DVD’s you can buy once you get into doing tricks and want to move around while hooping.
Hoopnotic Hoopdance Beginning Level 1 (http://www.amazon.com/Hoopnotic-Hoopdance-Beginning-Level-1/dp/B000RH6Q9A%3FSubscriptionId%3D19BAZMZQFZJ6G2QYGCG2 %26tag%3Dsquidooa43015-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165 953%26creativeASIN%3DB000RH6Q9A) is one that I really like.
Hoopnotica has a nice video on their main page you can find it here at http://www.hoopnotica.com/

Okay! Now lets get to the DIY part!
http://www.squidoo.com/hulahooping
This is the site that I used- but there are many out there!
DIY isn’t your thing? Well then check out http://www.hoopgirl.com/index.php?pt=info&id=9&hdr=hoops
P.S!
CHECK OUT HER BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS! OO LA LA!

http://www.hooping.org/ is a great site for more links and Videos! They do weekly trick videos too!

Okay I’m hooping now but I want a pretty hoop that shows my style!
Well then visit http://www.identi-tape.com/index.html they have all sorts of wonderful hoop tapes.
I just made one not too long ago that looks like the sun. I used a feather Boa to wrap it! Fuzzy hoop!

I think the best thing about hooping is I can get my kids out there doing it with me! I already enjoy dancing but there’s no way my son will belly dance with me! Hooping has became a family thing in the house (Yes! Even the hubby!)

Hope you enjoy the links and get you a hoop soon!
Hugs,
Nana~

Ya know what?? I asked for a hula hoop for Christmas, but I didn't get it. Then again, I could never keep that thing up when I was little, how would I keep it up now? lol It does look like fun tho.. and I might just have to make one too. I think I'll save your post and check them out when Spring comes around. A friend of mine has a weighted one, she's had gastric bypass, and lots taller than I am, and she said it might hit against the port on me, so I'm not sure if I would want a weighted one.

Congrats on your weight loss with this too!!!

Anyway.. it looks like fun.. and hula on lady!!

P.S. I always wanted to take hula lessons.. this might be a replacement for that.

P.P.S Nana?? How big around is your hoop? I just showed the pictures to my DH and he wanted to know. I am on dialup and can't view videos. Dang it.. but if you could just tell me that.. I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks!!

Donna, here is a site that explains how to make one. I believe the hoop hould stand somewhere between your navel and shoulder----Yup that's what the instructions say.
http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

I remember when everyone had one. I remember trying to teach my mother how to hula hoop and we ended up nearly peeing our pants laughing so hard. Oh.... those were the days....

Nana~

Yup Mel is right anywhere between your navel and your heart is a great place. I just hold the hoop up to where I want it and cut using my handy dandy pipe cutters! Mine sits just under my bewbs. kek.

Next time we'll talk OUTFITS! I'm making me a pair of those kickers (the fuzzy leg things) you see hoopers wearing.

So... you have to make the hoops yourself? Can you buy them from anywhere based on your height?

This looks really fun, thanks for sharing nana!

i think i am in on this.. I want to do the fire hoops.
I fugure with it being the winter and cold out.. the fire hoops will help me stay warm and heat the house at the same time. Note to Rich make sure the house insurance is current and paid up. I am not sure i can picture this me doing a hula hoop. It should be interesting.

Mel, I am glad to give you a smile and a laugh. I did go out and buy 1" pipe and have it all together. It is a lot harder to keep that sucker going then it is on the WII Fit. Wow...
I will keep at it and surprise others and my self.:faint:
Rich, you may not picture it, but I just had a visual and I was LMAO :)

I am new to the group and plan on having surgery 30Jan. I am a little nervous about how I will feel afterwards. I am an emotional eater. What will I do? Any advice?

Do you make them to sell, or just for your own enjoyment? Are they hard to make?

Nana~
02-20-2009, 01:05 PM
I make them for us, I'm thinking about doing an after school hoop club next year at the kids school. http://www.hoopnotica.com/index.php?cPath=3 has hoops for sale and so does alot of other place, an adult hoop costs about 45.00 per hoop. Then if you want weighted, fancy Led, or Poi hoops that's much more $.
They are not hard to make, but costly at first you have to buy a roll of tubing (est 35.00) a connector 1.00 and then your tapes (elec. tape comes in some colors and are like 3.97 a roll) or fancy glittery tapes are 5.00 to 7.00 + a roll.
One roll of the tubing will make like 8 to 10 hoops though so yes, it cost more if your only making one but not if your making more :)

Nana, are you going to the B2G G2G in Boise, in Oct? You should come and demonstrate--or something. I bet everyone would love to see you do it--live and in person. Maybe you could demonstrate how to make them..... just a thought. I know that selling them wouldn't be very good, because many will be traveling by plane and I don't think it would be easy taking it on the plane....Youknowhatimean????

I loved seeing your video. You are very good at it. I think I would love to get one... I used to love doing it when I was young--about 100 years ago..LOL...

Nana~
03-17-2009, 11:44 AM
Nope! Sorry I would love to but I can't travel right now all pennies must go into the new home :( I think even our yearly family visit to FL. is out this year...Waaaa :(
