I know that this is a huge no no.......but nonetheless it happens to the best of us.

Has anyone else noticed a drastic difference in the way you throw up after getting banded, as opposed to before? I've noticed that now when I throw up, I usually do not throw up what's in the lower (larger/bottom) level of my stomach. It is usually just the upper/top level - which usually either equates to dry nasty heaves, or a small amount of liquid/mucus.

I try very hard not to throw up, and my Zofran has been my helper in quelling it from getting too nasty. I just happened to make this observation today, and I wondered if anyone else has noticed this same thing after being banded.

Tattooedsuess,
What you are experiencing is called a "PB" a productive burp. From what I understand you may no longer "regurgitate" your bottom of the stomach food. It's below the band and it's as good as gone.

Please try really hard to not allow yourself to do this. Really chew your food to the point it is babyfood. Chew and swallow a little at a time. Then when you feel somewhat...fulfilled or full, just stop eating. This will prevent "PB"'s in some cases but not always. Never drink with meals as "PB"ing will most like occur each time.

Actual regurgitating your food from the bottom of your belly is harmful to the stability of your band. It will contract your stomach and may cause the band to slip with each movement.

I wish I could tell you more but shoot I just am not too sure. I've PB'd lots and it's subsided a bit, since my first fill but I've vomitted once prior to my fill, I tried to stomach bar-b-q chicken and my belly was not having it.

Do you mean full on vomiting, as in when you're sick? That hasnt happened to me yet. I'm hoping it never does. I was a big baby about vomiting before I got my band, now one of my kids only has to look pale and I'll spend hours neurotically convincing myself I feel nauseous and we're about to have a family vomit fest.

LOL @ Jacqui...I had a stomache flu a couple of weeks back and was terrified about throwing up ( which thankfully I didn't ).
I think there is a huge difference between a pb and real 'I'm sick I need the bathroom now.' throwing up. I am hoping I can avoid the first as much as possible and the second indefinitely...

Kelly, I have only vomited once since banding. Not a PB, an upset stomach, gotta get what's in there out, VOMIT. It was quick and easy, and I was surprised how it just came on up. ??? It was all liquid though, so I'm sure that helped. With you having pregnancy nausea, though, you are likely to vomit food. Thank goodness you chew well, right? I wonder if an acid reducer would help you at all? In addition to the anti-nausea med you take. Seems like if you can keep the acid down in the upper portion, it might help your nausea? I dunno. Just a thought. What are you, 14 weeks now? 16? You should put a due date ticker on your sig!

It definately is NOT a PB. I've had that happen only a few times and learned to chew well and take smaller bites. I've been banded for almost 2 years, so I definately know this is not a PB.

I am pregnant and am experiencing morning sickness, thus the full on puking. (So out of my control) Everyday seems to get better though, especially with the anti-nausea meds my OB has me on.

I find that if I try hard to quell the sickness, that only makes me feel worse. If I just let myself puke, I immediately feel better, then I can get back on track.

It seems like if I lay on my side first thing in the morning when I'm waking up, that helps settle my stomach down enough where I can run downstairs here and take my meds. Then I'm golden for the day. I'm slowly catching on to new tricks to keep my stomach happy.

I do have to mention too that this pregnancy is waaaay better than when I was pg with my son. I was puking 5-7 times per day for the first 2 trimesters, then around 2-3 during my last. And it lasted until he was out of my body. I was even puking in labor with him. Of course I wasn't banded with him either, so the puking really wasn't as much of a concern/issue.

This time around I throw up maybe once per day now, unless I can make my stomach feel really good straight away, then sneak down and hurry up and get my meds. It's definately getting better. I make sure to drink Powerade if I've been throwing up, and to eat healthy too. And of course I take my prenatals and calcium chews too.

My OB takes good care of me, and I read a lot to stay informed too. It's interesting to see how different things are this time around as opposed to with my son. I hate not having anyone to talk to who has been pg with the band to offer advice or reassurance, but I'll make it through just fine. I have lots of doctors, surgeons, nutritionists, specialists, etc. who are there for me and take good care of me, so we're being extremely careful and cautious. I'd rather be overprepared than not ready at all.

I've had both normal sick throwing up and PB throwing up in the past year and here is the distinct difference I see.

Sick, forceful, but it sputters, I think this is essentially as it tries to load past the band into the top section so only small amount come up, but with force.

PB, no force, more like a freight elevator just delivering goods for you to move out on your own. This is gross, but it's sort of like slowly food begins filling your mouth (similar to the egg white like slime. It just slowly keeps filling your mouth until you spit it out).
