Have any of you had problems with watermelon? I ate watermelon for the first time, since being banded, this last weekend. The first portions I ate on Friday seemed to go down OK, but since Tuesday morning, I have been having major PBs and getting stuck.
Monday, for my dinner I chose to eat only watermelon (got home very late and was hot and tired--easiest, quickest and tastiest meal). I even took the time to scrape out those little tiny white seeds in that small seedless, watermelon heart variety. I also spit out any part that seemed too fiberous and at the time I was enjoying the melon, I didn't have problems with eating it. Since then Everything I eat seems to be taking forever to go down which is causing me to have major PBs and have food get stuck. I'm at work and wasn't successful with my lunch of tuna salad and crackers. Water and coffee are even taking forever to go down.
I'd love your thoughts on this....

Sounds like you are swollen. I would go back to the 48 hrs liquid diet and slowly move up again. It may take longer than 48 hrs to heal - pay close attention to your body.
I'm having the same problems with this last fill - I get too anxious to resume the full meal deal and then I puke and have to start all over again. I have post-it notes all over - "Slow down", "sip", "don't gulp" etc!! LOL
Best wishes...

I agree, it does sound like you irritated yourself and some swelling developed. A couple of days on liquids should help you. If not, I would visit the Doc again.

Listen to Patrick and Cindy. There is something wrong. Watermelon has a lot of water in it but it also has a lot of fiber. You just don't notice it. Take liquid care of yourself. FYI - I'm aboutg 2 1/2 years banded and sometimes I get stuck on CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST!! Can you believe that? True. I sooth myself with water and thin soup and Ritz crackers.

What i can't figure out, is what irritated me? I got a fill about 4 weeks ago that was the BOMB (good fill)! I'm losing and I've had to put into practice all my bandster rules--sipping, small bites, chewing till goo, and I can only eat about 1/4-1/2 cup of food at a time (depending on what it is). Even my meds are causing me problems--which is a new one. I'm not hungry and I think I have found my sweet spot. Then... this happens.
Thanks for the replies. Well, tonight and for the next 2 days....I'm on soup and other liquids.
I'm trying to remember... and i don't think I have had any more than a couple of uncomfortable PBing or getting stuck episodes during this past month. So I am really confused as to what caused this.

Thanks for the laugh......I've heard of others talk about how fickle their band is, but since I had never experienced that, i just felt so sure that it was due to something else.

I recently had the same reaction. Hadn't had a single problem, then had a fill and I finally am having to REALLY use the bandster rules and it really does come as surprise, especially when you haven't really had to pay too much attention to things. Right now I feel like my list of things I can't eat is WAY longer than the things I can!! Of course that might change tomorrow, who the hell knows!? Very fickle, indeed!!

I went 2 days on liquid and one day I will be on mushies. I'm hoping that this will help. I noticed today that I am sniffing and I am feeling like something is not quite right with my health. So maybe the tightness was a forewarning that I may be catching something. It's amazing how many people (teachers and students) at work are sick. I'd be real surprised if I didn't catch something.
Thanks for your responses. I am still going to stay away from watermelon. I never realized just how fibrous it can be--better safe than sorry.

I haven't had this problem yet but could some of the fibrous part of the melon be partially blocking the stoma? If going back to fluids a few days to help decrease swelling from possible irritation doesn't help I'd call the doc. Hope you get better soon. Keep us posted.

Keep the watermelon - it's yummy, full of liquids and fiber!
Brenda - if the stoma was blocked - she'd be puking up with an ungodly amount of saliva. Funny how our bands make us do that... gross too - kind of like that fish that produces all that goo when you touch it...
Mel - changes in the weather - Strep is going around our area - our 18 yr old came down with it Wednesday night - she rarely gets sick - I was shocked when we went to the Dr office - and they said it is near epidemic in the area - talk about only knowing what's going on in your back yard! LOL
I truely believe our bands are one of the first things to tell us things are out of whack in our bodies - it betrays us - when I think I'm cool, calm and collected - the silly thing tightens up and betrays me!! LOL ...and after I paid so much money for it to be a host in my body LOL LOL LOL
Best wishes with the seasonal sniffles - but do call the doc if you start to feel dehydrated and can't keep liquids down.

OH - P.S. - When I took Kaci to Dr. for strep - my band Dr. shares the same hallway - he inquired about my last fill - told him I'm still tight because of the initial puke in the office and I keep gulping instead of sipping irritating it worse... - he said "give yourself 2 weeks to settle back down - if you can't keep liquids down - call me on Monday" ... Liquids stay down - so I guess I just need more time to get things settled! Plus, I'm actually losing after - what - a near stall for 4 months...
