Yesterday I ran in the Melbourne Marathon - the 7.5km fun run. It was an amazing experience. I've put in a fair bit of training to get this far, working my mileage up slowly but surely. Its taken months. I was nervous, hoping I wouldnt have to stop and walk. But I made it all the way through, and I did it in 50 mintues, I was just thrilled with my pace.
I think I can now call myself a "runner". No shuffling, no stopping and walking, I maintained good form and reasonable breathing throughout. I was hurting in the home straight though, running is definitely a form of insanity. Its a mind over body thing for sure.
The course was amazing, Melbourne has some beautiful leafy boulevards, we ran right up the middle of Marine Parade, along the bay, up Fitzroy Street and finished up up St Kilda Rd, to the Arts Centre. I've done fun runs, but this was my first "major" one, all the big main roads blocked so we could run right up the middle of them (that feels weird, keep expecting to be hit by a car or a tram, lol) and people gathered on the boundaries cheering you on - incredible.
I crossed the finish line bawling, I must have looked strange but it was overwhelming to think how far I've come in the last year. I may not be quite at goal but I'm a normal sized person now and way fitter than your average Joe Blow. I'm really really proud of what I've achieved and I had a good cry to prove it.
Next stop is the Sussan 10km women's event in December! I'm going to do a half marathon one day, I think I've definitely caught the bug.
