Woohoo! I saw the pulmonologist (Dr Lowery) today and he said NO SLEEP STUDY! I am happy but I hope that it won't hurt me. I was worried with what Dr Cahn's office would say but Debra said it was fine. I really didn't want to do a sleep study.

Do you think that it will hurt me? My BMI is 48.6 and my only comorbidity is hypertension. My insurance policy states it should be but now I am wondering. Dr Cahn had been pretty adament at his seminar about getting one...

What did you bandsters do? Did you all get sleep studies? Gosh, now I hope that I am not the only one...

I have my psych and nutritionist on Tuesday. One step closer!

I didn't have a sleep study done.. but I did have UGI done because of reflux. My hiatel hernia was so big the Dr said he could put his fist in it, but it's fixed now, no more reflux :)

Yep you're getting closer.. it's a wonderful place to be... you're gonna love/hate your band :D But I would do it all over again.. in a heartbeat!!!

I had a sleep study done, but I had things that told the doctor I needed one, in fact two sleep studies done. I sleep much better with my cpap machine. My bmi was 40. We are all very different. Enjoy you psych eveluation, hope the nutritionist you see is Jolyn Seibert. She's great.

I had a sleep study done prior to my Lap band surgery, but I already had a CPAP and what they found was that even after having it for about 6 years it was still at the right setting. Physically the worst thing about having this done was that my doctor insisted that I not sleep with the CPAP for 3 days prior to the sleep study. According to him it takes three whole days/nights without the CPAP to really find out how bad you are. By the night of the sleep study I was totally drained and hadn't hardly slept for the three nights. The other bad thing was that it was a significant amount of money out of my pocket even though I had BCBS of Michigan traditional coverage. I even got a new CPAP machine and mask out of it, but 3 months later after the lap band surgery I found that I did not need it at all. So now I am without the Lap band. I actually missed it for about 2 weeks since I was so used to sleeping with it and the noise that it made. Now that I do not need it I am really happy to not have the noise and the annoyance of wearing the mask.

Christina,
I had a sleep study but I knew that I had sleep apnea. So I don't know the opposite side of things.
Not all WL patients have sleep apnea. If Debra said it's ok then it should be ok. She knows what she's doing.
Don't get freaked out over anything it will all work out.
Who's doing your psych eval?

Christina, I'm a patient of Dr. Cahn's also. My BMI was over 60 when I started. I did not have to have a sleep study. They sent me home with a portable thing I wore on my finger for overnight and the results of that showed I was fine and didn't need the big study. Dr. Cahn was fine with that.
Good luck in this process! Make sure and let us know when your surgery is.

I agree with everyone else -- I had a sleep study done - it was horrible. Honestly an experience I don't want to ever repeat --- I felt like I never slept the whole night and my c-pap and I were best friends before banding - then afterwards, I couldn't sleep with it - ever. I don't know why....but today, 61 lbs gone for good, I do not snore and do not get tired anymore during the day....so if you don't need a sleep study - that's a GOOD thing lol

The only advice I would give you is to have the lady that handles the insurance approvals for Dr. Cahn's double check with your insurance to make sure they do not require the sleep study. My insurance did require the sleep study before they would approve my surgery, so just to be safe have them or yourself make sure. Hopefully you don't because they tend to be a bit spendy and are not very comfortable. I was lucky my mom runs a local sleep study center for a local hospital and she did mine, but I had no issues.

Thanks for all the info! I just spoke with Debra and she said that the insurance shouldn't require a sleep study so I think that I will be fine. I am so nervous about the insurance approving something like this. I want it sooo much. It is hard to rely on an outside force controlling such a big aspect of my life. I am not accustomed to it.

My psych eval is with Mark Snow. Dr Cahn said that he gets his reports in super quick so that is why I chose him. Did any of you see him?

Yes, my nutrition counseling is with Jolyn. I have heard such good things about her and I am really excited.

I didn't have one. I had been to an ENT guy a couple of months prior (for a separate issue) and he said I didn't need one. That was good enough.

I know, Mark Snow's office said to expect 3 hours. That is a lot of writing, huh? Debra in Dr Cahn's office said that they recommend Mark becuase he gets the paperwork in so quickly.

You got out of the sleep study? You lucky thing! I had one. There's nothing like having a hot young guy in a "hotel room" with you, pasting electrodes all over your body and putting sticky goo in your hair before tucking you in bed so you can perform alone in front of a camera. Ahhh, the fond memories.

Hi, I did have a sleep study and I thought it was pretty good. Cable T.V. and no DH or little boy, was kind of like being in a hotel room, although I have to say one of the electrodes kept coming off through out the night, and that was a little annoying. I also had Mark Snow for my eval and I thought he was totally cool! Be ware of his HUGE leather couch, is very sink-ish and if your short and fat( not as fat as I used to be, but alas, still short) like I am it's a bit much!! Good luck and I hope all goes well with your insurance.
