View Full Version : In the meantime: Exercise

Ok,I've noticed that I put off doing things that would improve my health, like exercise. I've been thinking about it a lot. Why do I not behave in my own self interest?
So I decided that I'd go to a shrink to see if I can find out why I put off exercising, so now I'm putting off going to a shrink.
So in the meantime I've decided why is not important. I don't need to know why, I just need to do it.
So July 20th 2008- I exercised on the xbike for 45 minutes and did the stretches off the steps for my ankles and calfs. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow. I have a good idea I may still be avoiding the shrink.

Dustbunny that was funny, but glad you got some exercise in. I hope that bug hits me soon!!

DB,
Good for you!! I don't know what it is but I do the same thing. Ok before it was because I couldn't now i really don't have an excuse. Except that I need to get into it slowly and not overdo it.

Hmmmm....interesting dilema. Avoiding the shrink by going and exercising. LOL!!! Isn't it amazing what we will do in avoidance situations.

Thanks Betty, but I was only accidently funny, every condition I have has as treatment: exercise. It just doesn't make any sense that I am not moving at every opportunity.

Yes Julz:
Maybe I found something I want to do less than exercise!
Really, just doing it is better than knowing why I don't do it, isn't it? What if I spent $2,000 to find out why I'm not acting in my own best interest?
Then I'd have to figure out what would motivate me to exercise and then work through the whole thing DB
My shrink is actually a really nice guy and I like him a lot. Says I'm normal. Go figure!

lol DB -- hooray for the exercise! forget the shrink - nice or not lol...

I have a challenge for you -- since July is nearer over than not -- how about for August you come and join us in the Exercise Challenge thread? You can do whatever you want, however long you want -- you just come and brag about it each time you exercise...

looking forward to seeing you there in August --- heck, don't put it off - come and join in NOW for the July Exercise Challenge -- you already have one done!!!!

Thanks for the invite Mo, but for some reason the challenges don't work well for me. Let me just see what happens when I try it this way. I did the challenges for months and only completed one once and felt like a loser the rest of the time. Not the good kind of loser.
I'm just avoiding the shrink, no pressure. :0)

DB~
I'm right there with you. Between depression, RA, Fibro, sponylosthesis, hip surgery, Epstein Barr, and trying to lose weight. The best thing for it is all of the above is exercise and diet...there is not guess work about it. Everyone I have seen tells me the same thing, including the shrink.

I just have very little drive to get me moving. I keep thinking that when I'm feeling depressed etc....that I just need to go walk. Even if it is only for 10 min at a time. I'll get there, I just need a shove. LOL~~

Okay:
Day two:
45 minutes on the xbike and heel stretches. Monday
Maybe just doing it and not examining the reason why or why not and not waiting until I am moved, might work for me.
After I've done this for a month I'll start working on doing the Wild Divine for stress relief. That's the journey to the wild divine, not to be confused with the Spooky Ole Wild Divine! :0) DB

I agree with the idea of not waiting to find out why you don't do something....just do it. Does that make sense? I've decided I have NO excuse for not exercising except for the fact that I'm a lazy ass. Does that count?? I resolve to get my walking in this week and head back to Curves. Thanks Deb!

Hey Cheryl:
I'm going to go walking tonight because you make it sound like a good idea! When it gets cool out this evening I'm going to walk around. It's really nice outside just before it gets dark. Maybe not too far, maybe to Cole Road and back. Thanks Cheryl!

Well Deb, in my case, I figure ANY movement is a good thing!

Me too Cheryl, it's all good! DB

Okay, Charlie and I went out walking at midnight. I used my walking poles. We didn't make it to Cole road, there were a bunch of noseeums around, or pollen that made us itch a lot. The moon was really spooky behind whispy grey clouds. So it was only about 15 minutes but anything moving is good right? DB.

I think you should walk or ride a bike to the shrink's office, 2 birds with one stone... lol

But really congrats on getting moving, that's the first step! Keep it up!

I agree DB - any movement IS good! I was going to suggest grabbing someone to go walking with - I did it last week and believe it or not my 10 year old kept up with me the ENTIRE 2.5 mile walk - plus it's just more fun to walk with someone.

it would be expensive but you could always ask your shrink to walk with ya lol

Funny you two! I'm skipping today to let my hips rest. (ok before you start, Yes skipping is hard on hips, i am skipping exercise)
I am already feeling a difference in the way i feel. Maybe I'll do a late night walk tonight again. The rains today might have blown away the no see ums. They when they bite the area stings.
Enjoy the evening. DB

hey DB ...I completely understand letting the hips rest -- sometimes I have to take a day off because my body just rebels...take it easy - there is always tomorrow

This morning I'm down two pounds. This is the first movement I've seen in a long while. Today I'm getting back on the xbike. It's the only way I'm going to get to goal. Just food intake patrol doesn't do it for me.
It doesn't take much exercise to improve my balance and make me more sure footed. I'm feeling improvement already, after a few days.
Everything I deal with health wise is improved by exercise. Diabetes, osteo, fibro and this new thing I'm dealing with (have been for a long time but was unaware, and don't know it's name yet) I think it's AS. Anyway they all improve with exercise.
Mood too, I forgot that my mood improves too. hmm... maybe memory too
Tomorrow it will be a year since I was banded. I lost 39 pounds on the pre-op diet and only 15 or so since. It has been up 12 pounds down 10 for months. Mostly my weight has stabilized. I'm pleased to not be gaining, don't get me wrong, but I am disappointed that I have not lost more.
I still hope to ditch the diabetes and this year I am going to faithfully avoid the shrink and just do it. Move it and lose it!

DB that is great! I am so glad to hear that you were able to see results in such a short time too! I won't preach excercise at ya, but it is what I think got me to my goal! I would encourage you to find whatever you like to do and keep moving!

I hadn't weighed in a week, so I'm not saying it happened in 3 days, but it's in the right direction. It encourages me. Most weeks are the same as the one before.

little T, I'll bet that your age worked in your favor a bit too. I know that 25 years ago moving was not only easier, but more appealing to me too. They just didn't have the band then. Then you had to eat beef hotdogs or the grapefruit diet or a hundred others, diets all worked for a bit. What a cool thing this band is! Everything but the barfing is good. You have a lot to be proud of, going all the way to goal.
I'm just trying to get the exercise in, I just need to do it, maybe I can learn to love it.

Cheryl, none of the photos in your article did justice to the way you looked Tuesday, you look healthy, pretty. elegant and professional and way thinner. You've done so well. I'm glad if I've motivated you. You inspire me.

Today it was half an hour on the exbike. Tomorrow my day begins at 5:30. Maybe I can do the bike before my shower I wonder if the bike in the morning might help get the stiffness out faster. I'll let you know. It usually takes an hour (and coffee) until I feel good after waking up.
Move it and lose it! DB

I have to agree - without exercise I KNOW I'd still be stuck at the same weight...it's hard when we have health issues - but we just have to do it more days than not...

CONGRATS DB on your one year bandiversary!!! My how times flies huh?

I know - I felt like it was 'way after' too lol...I guess that has more to do with what food phase we were in at the time than anything :)

I agree with both of you. I really lucked out that I am still semi-young and was able to get the band. It seemed like all the stars aligned for me!

DB - keep us posted on how your excercise goes this week!

Oh have the B-day... Celebrate your age and know that you are not a number, but the whole sum of what you have done in those years..

1. been an inspiration to others
2. staying young
3. being a beautiful person
4. accomplishing things others struggle with
5. Being a great friend and supporter of people you have never met

Those are just some things off the top of my head...

I have 1 1/2 years to umm the next decade.. LOL I am looking forward to it..

Pattie, that is so sweet! You brought me to tears with our sweet words! I am sure the tears have nothing to do with Aunt Flo's visit!

Dustbunny
07-27-2008, 06:51 AM
Just Wait until you can tell Aunt Flo to take a hike. It's so freeing. That is one perk of being in your 50s.
i always dreaded the thought of the Pause, until it got close, and by then I was so ready. Your hormones stableize and your family doesn't have to deal with the whole Dr. Jekle and Mrs Hyde Thing. It's a good thing.
For exercise yesterday I walked for about 7 minutes at Band Camp, Stitchy, Judy, Sara and I walked to the cabin to get Julz for dinner, and back. DB

Ever since the Charlotte G2G, I miss my out-of-town bandsters! Picturing you walking and talking with Judy and Sara makes me miss them more because I can picure myself walking with them! Are you still at bandcamp? Tell everyone I said hi!
