I found a great book, it's a little over the top and in your face but I thought it wonderful and informative.

Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin
The authors are not weight loss experts but did their research and it makes sense to me.

Borders sells it for $14 but Costco had it for $7.69.

Here is a passage for those who substitute Splenda for sweetners.

"Because we're having so much fun, let's bash the s$#& out of Splenda, one of the newer sweetners. Splenda is made by chlorinating sugar, changing its molecular structure. The finished product is called sucralose. The makers of this poison tout its lack of calories and claim it's safe for diabetics. The FDA calls sucralose 98 percent pure. The other 2 percent contains small amounts of heavy metals, methanol, and arsenic. Well, gee, at least it doesn't have calories. So what if it has a little arsenic? Sucralose has been found to cause diarrhea; organ, genetic, immune system, and reproductive damage; swelling of the liver and kidneys; and a decrease in fetal body weight. What a splendid product! According to Dr. Joseph Mercola in Consumer Research magazine's article 'The Potential Dangers of Sucralose,' 'There is no clear-cut evidence that sugar substitutes are useful in weight reduction. On the contrary, there is some evidence that these substances may stimulate appetite.'"

Now also keep in mind that you could probably find any other number of people who have Dr.'s that say Splenda is great. Any topic is up for interpretation but for me this book is in my face about what I am putting in my body and what it does to my body.

Sparkie,

I read that book awhile back. It would be offensive to some people. It didn't bother me...I'm not offended that easily. I did think that a lot of the information in it was worth reading then researching on your own.

I did a vegetarian diet at one time. I lost weight very fast. I think what these gals are doing would be very difficult to do. It would also be expensive. But, I think they have some good information if you can get past being offended by the language and insults.

I'm not crazy about the language and insults and I'm one of those who would refuse to pay for trash for fear of encouraging filth on perfectly good book paper. That aside, the info is fabulous!

I agree with their take on Splenda, even their bitchy attitude about that and other junk we put into our bodies. I like the idea of being a food snob. It's a good perspective on how we should all be protecting our bodies and nurturing them with whole, natural, real healthy foods.

I suppose I prefer not to have raunchy language all through a book. Well-placed expletives are expressive. Over the top is trashy, IMO. :)

What other great info did you find, Elizabeth?

We all react differently to stimuli (read self-help books) but anything factual can only be helpful.

I have learned a lot of things since being banded. Some things I knew because my mom writes cookbooks, healthy ones, although she is usually the last one I ask because I tend to get lectures about my weight and she loses sight of the question I originally asked. I have learned a lot from the boards here about eating three meals a day (keep the body from going into starvation mode). It mostly seems like common sense.
In a nutshell:

Carbs bad
Soda bad (diet and regular)
Splenda bad
Veggies good
Protein in moderation good (not an adkins diet fan)
Cardio good every day
Strength training good 3x a week (my personal trainer says that so I listen)
Don't drink with meals (still have a hard time listening to that one)
Drink 64oz of water a day

A few other things I am sure I have left out but those are the things I try to remember. Anyone else have a short list to live by?
