Well I posted couple weeks back that something was wrong. I was right...!!! I went yesterday to the doctor told him I have NO restriction none what so ever. He checked and I don't! NO fluid none so he filled me back up and its gone already. I AM LEAKING!
I have another test to see where the leak is.....I am so angry, sad, mad, hurt, PO'd, you name it! I can't afford to take more time off and then starting all over again... I am crushed. What do I do??????????????

Aww bummer news, girl! *big comforting hugs*

I can understand that panic that you're feeling! But it might not be as bad as you're thinking. I've heard several stories about leaking bands that were easily repaired. Typically a leak in a band is caused the doctor accidental poking the tubing while doing an adjustment. When that's the case, the replacement surgery is NOTHING like the original surgery. It's a quick outpatient procedure that has the patient back on track in no time at all. Let's hope that's what's going on with your band.

Ya know, blessings are often disguised by seemingly bad things. Keep your eyes open for the blessing in this, ok?

I'm sure you'll get some solid advice from people who have gone thru this. Until then I just wanted to give you some reassurance and some hugs.

It may not even have to be surgical... they also can, if the leak is small, inject this different solution into the band (I can't recall the name right now) that is thicker, and less likely to leak.

anyone who had this stuff in their band, please chime in!!

I'm sure it can be resolved... don't panic until you have all the facts, then it CAN be dealt with.

it's not the end of the world.

Breathe deep!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Cheri,
Continue with your bandster "ways" and any setback you experience will hopefully be minimal. Keep up the exercise, keep the portions typical of bandster portions and watch those carbs! Drink your water, take your time with your meals and do a little extra pampering for yourself to fight the stress.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Oh Cheri I am so sorry you're having to deal with a leak!!! Try to stick with your new eating habits as best you can and maybe focus on volumetrics since you're open - higher volume but staying low in calories.

The solution that can be injected, I think, is called Omnipaque. It is thicker than saline and I have heard it described as Fix-a-Flat for the band. I hope you'll get more info soon about exactly where the leak is and be able to move forward with a solution. Hang in there and we are here for you!!

Well the doctor office called me today my test is thursday. I guess it really similar to a fill but they put some sort of dye in to see where the leak is. He thinks it my be my port. I hope its a easy fix!!! Anyone out there have a leak before>? and if so what did they do???? thanks....

Cheri, I did have my port replaced!! really it was very easy...
I was in an out in two hours... It is just a bummer... My port leak was due to my surgeon puncturing the port when trying to do an adjustment.
I spent 6 months of my first year with my port leaking.
I hope that they find it in the port area...
Keeping you in my thoughts..

Oh Cheri I'm so sorry about the leak! I think we would all panic in that situation. We go through a lot deciding to get this surgery, then actually having it, and the couple of weeks afterwards, and then we continue to bust our butt along the way. Hitting a road block like this can definitely be disheartening. The good news is that your doctor is working to find a way to fix the probelm and the best news is that most people I've seen with a leak in their band have no problem getting it corrected. You've done so great with your weight loss, and it will continue no doubt! Keep us updated.

Sorry to hear about your troubles :( I went to have a fill once and all of my saline was gone... so my Dr. filled me with omnipaque. It is just a thicker solution. I would mention that to your Dr. before you have any kind of surgery done. It can not hurt anything.
Hopefully this will all be a simple fix.
Best of luck to you and we are all thinking of you!

Well....good news and bad news...
bad news Its official I have a leak. It was pretty wild to watch the contrast dye stuff go through the tubing. I have to have surgery;-(
Now for the good news.. my doctor said if your gonna have to spring a leak I have it in the right place.. its where your tubing from the band and tubing from the port hook together...that part came undone..he didnt say how or why it happens but he said its simple to fix. So I am not sure when it will be but soon I hope...

I am so so nervous about getting the band fixed. I am so disappointed and upset because I feel like "why me" and then I tell myself "why not" you....?
I am just so unsure on what to do. Part of me just wants to say the heck with it and leave the band alone and not get it fixed. But I know I cannot do it without.
Any words of advice? I just am so scared..I know I have already been through it before, but thats what scares me. URGH I am just torn......

ginabobina
04-04-2008, 03:10 PM
Sorry you're feeling so nervous - it's totally natural to be nervous about surgery. Are they going in through the port area to reconnect the tubing? Will they even have to use gas - it almost seems like it would be so close to the port area that they could access it really quickly. I hope it will be very straightforward. I imagine there would be much less invasion and short duration... have you had your gall bladder out? I wonder if it might be more like that but even less pain since nothing will be cut or handled inside. Keep talking it out with us! Hugs to you!

UGH! I am just finding this thread and that stinks that this has happened to you! From what I read on the thread, it shouldn't be to big of a surgery. I would encourage you to get it fixed though. Think about how far you have come! You don't want to give up now after fighting so hard for what you have! Surgery will be over before you know it and it will not be as difficult to adjust to as the original band surgery.

When I went in for my TT and thigh lift, I was torn on whether to do it or not. Now that it is all over and I am healed for the most part, I am so glad I did it! You will be glad you did it to when it is all over! I will be thinking of you on Wednesday!

Aww ,,, HUGS needed here !!! Sending them your way !!! For me fear tends to = not enough information. I'm thinking Gina has a point. Do you know what kind of anaesthetic they are planning on using? Since it's just a port thing, maybe a local is all they need. I'd a thousand times rather endure the stress of that than the fear of "going under." But even if it needs to be the "whole banana," I agree 100% with Tami, I'd hate to see you give up on having a functioning band. I rely on mine soooo much, and trust it sooooo much to keep me on track, that I'd do anything I had to to keep it working for me. We're all right here in your corner cheering for you !!! I'm sending up a prayer for you right now, and I totally trust things will work out the way they are supposed to work out !!!

Hey everyone!
Well the doctor told me he isnt putting me under...but he said we will make you loopy..I guess the stuff they give you so you dont remember anything. And they will numb the area by the port and go in that way. He said if I just had to spring a leak its in the best spot to fix. I just have to think positive and get this done and be on my way again!

It sounds like the anesthetic that you get when you get a colonoscopy or an endoscopy. You just wake up, but I guess you weren't really under.
No big deal. And it also means that it won't be very long. Normally the surgery takes a lot longer.

What a bummer! But like Susan said, sometimes these things can be a blessing in disguse. Think of this as an opportunity to really change your lifestyle so that you can still get the results that you want. Losing weight is never easy, it takes a complete lifestyle change, the surgery can help get people started and on their way to their goal, but in the end, if you dont make a life change, nothing will ever change. So take this as a chance to really concentrate on those new habits that the doctors and nutritionists are teaching you so that you can be successful no matter what obstacles come into your path.

How's your restriction? Next time I get loose I'm going to try Volumetrics, which our nutritionist recommended... there's a book about it but basically it deals with adding low-calore bulk to what you're eating to feel full for less calories. Do you feel pretty well healed up? Give yourself time to get back into the losing zone - I'm just so glad this was resolved so quickly and you're not still sitting there with a leak! Glad to hear how you're doing! hugs!

the saga continues...I swear. Well last week I had the "fill" and its been hell every since. I have so much acid in my throat...I finally called today and I go back tomorrow to have some removed.. I tried to wait to see if things got any better but its getting worse.. I love the restriction part because I can only eat very little..but the acid burning in my throat ...its awful. ARGH!

I know the feeling, but it's not worth the esopageal irritation that occurs because of reflux. I am going to have a smidge taken out next week as well. My worst time is at night. I am worried because I have gotten to so use to being tight, and am really worried about being too loose and gaining. So, we will just have to support each other on this one.

Yes nights are worse for me also. I have been sleeping in the lazyboy chair. But I love the restriction. But I can't take this reflux. I hope he takes out as little as possible.

Yeah no kidding! My sister's give me crap about this band... They say I'm cheating! What a way to cheat............

bgrand

I am in awe when I hear someone say that someone told them that this was cheating.
I have never had anyone say this to me and all my family, friends and co-workers comment on how hard it seems and how they are amazed at our courage to do this every day. I have even had some of them go to Dr. V for a consult.
I cannot even imagine what my response would be if some one told me that this was cheating or this was the easy way out....well, yes I can!!

I have yet another question....today I went to have a fill. When he was checking to see how much I have he couldn't get any out.?????? But I know I'm not leaking cause its not like before I have restriction. So he thinks I could have a kink?????? SO anyone out there ever have trouble with this?????? If so what happens??????

I'm sorry to hear about your band problems. You would think after so many months/years having a band you would almost be "in the clear" of such problems at this point...you've accomplished all of your goals, and you have come such a long way! I remember when I first joined on B2g you were one of the many that I looked up to! I hope everything gets better for you..I hate to hear these stories about band problems.

band problems... go away, u hear me?!!!?!!!? (there, i think it heard me) =)

I guess I do have some sort of a kink. When I get a fill it doesnt go right in...take awhile and they have a hell of a time taking some out. but its been awhile since I have had a fill.

Hi Cheri,
Remeber the band is only a tool. Only a portion of the plan. You are near goal and doing great. My doctor tells me I am in control. So keep up the good work you can do it.

I am just seeing this thread and wanted to add my thoughts and good wishes to you. I am sure this is a frustrating situation and one that I know I fear...as I'm sure we all do....that could happen to us. Good luck getting it all sorted out and I hope you can get back on track (or stay there) through all this!
