View Full Version : Silly question...but can I eat before a fill?

I'm having my first fill this afternoon, and I was wondering if I'm allowed to eat breakfast and lunch as normal before my fill? Or is it better to have a completely empty stomach for a fill? This is probably a silly question but I thought I better double check!

Thank you!!! :)

You should discuss it with your doc, but MINE has me stop eating the evening before a fill, and no beverages for AT LEAST 4 HOURS BEFORE AS WELL.

Again, your doc may view it differently, so check with him/her.

Mine is the same way and nothing solid for 48 hours after.

Glad I read this because that's something they never mentioned and I'm having a fill in a couple weeks. Sharon

Pam, I'm glad you asked that question. I'm getting my fill tomorrow and it didn't occur to me I might have to stop eating after tonight. I'm going to call my doctor's office right now!
I'm ready to get out of bandster's hell and finally feel some restriction. Still, even without the restriction, I've maintained a 15-lb loss after getting the band 10/18.

Check out this website. It's pretty comprehensive about pre-fill instructions:

My doctor said nothing to eat after midnight on the day I am getting a fill, probably why he schedule fills in the am rather that the afternoons. I like the idea of having an empty stomach when I get a fill. Check with your doctor to see what he recommends and good luck !

Thank you everyone for responding!!!

I checked with my doctor and he doesn't really have any rules regarding diet before/after a fill. As long as I don't have a full stomach when I go in, then it's fine with him. He doesn't require us to go on fluids right afterwards either. I had a 3.5 cc band fill this afternoon and then ate spaghetti for supper! Strange how the doctors really vary in their advice! I think to be on the safe side, I'll stick with not eating or drinking anything for at least 4 hours before a fill and then determine my post-fill meal depending how I feel after each fill.

Thanks again everyone!

Edited to add - I wonder if the method the doctor uses to give a fill determines whether or not you have to fast beforehand. My doctor does NOT use fluoroscopy to do his fills. Maybe you need to fast when you have it done that way! My doctor just feels for the port under the skin and sticks the needle in!

My doctor always told me to eat, but nothing too heavy. Use common sense. He also said I could eat after a fill, too. Again, reasonable. Don't wolf down a sandwich.
