View Full Version : To Burp or Not to Burp

...that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to suffer the annoyance of feeling stuck or suffer the slings and arrows of a small sip of soda in order to produce said burp and possibly unsticking oneself.
Ok in plainer english than ripping off the bard-has anyone out there taken a sip of soda to make yourself burp? Not a PB just a good old fashioned burperoo to possibly unstick myself.
I don't know exactly what the culprit is, I am chew chew chewing and taking tiny bites. But I can feel it moving around in there and there is a can of diet A&W sitting on my kitchen table thanks to DH buying a 12 pack. I've tried the usual including almost killing myself trying to do that damn dog yoga thingy. And I want to go to bed!!!!
This is the 3rd time I have gotten stuck like this pre-fill and no apres-fill. I don't slime and I don't PB. And I think I am eating ok.
So to bring on a burp or not????

Well, I've never pb'ed but have definately experienced this dilemna of which you speak! In fact, my body wasn't appreciative of the cereal I just ate and so I've just finished making this judgement call a few minutes ago!!

Just like barfing...I fight it for all it's worth!! (I know-TMI).

It took about 2 minutes (felt like hours) of calming myself down and stretching my torso to avoid burping because I could definately tell that breakfast would make an encore appearance if I went ahead and burped!

Ahh, the joys of eating too early in the morning!

Thanks LapBandit!!! I really appreciate you answering.

I did finally take a a few sips of the soda since it was 2 am and I was exhausted. Not much happened. I wanted a big huge burp to move the stuff down or at this point BP it up. I only burped a little stronger than usual. Things moved around a little. I just gave up and went to bed.
This morning it is better but not gone. So I am on liquids all day and currently waiting for some more advice.
Anyone???

Oh, poor Diva....

I heard the following advice for stuck food (which is sounds like you have)...

Sit on the toilet and bend over (sorry - but desperate times call for desperate measures)

Drink some adolf's meat tenderizer in hot water (I swear I heard that here)

Bend over the arm of your sofa and try to cough it up.

good luck and let us know how it goes.

Oh, Diva I'm sorry, I've been there many times and it's so uncomfortable. I haven't found that drinking anything helps. Liquid just comes right back up again and the golf ball is still there. The last bad one I had lasted for 24 hours (and I didn't even try to eat the whole time, but I was hungry). I was gentle with myself for the next day and just had soup.

Good luck.

My DD said she can unstick with a huge gulp of water. Doesn't work for me! If I try to force water, it shoots back up like a volcano. Stop eating, sitting up very straight while taking deep breaths helps for me...but I usually am quick to slim until said item is dislodged.

Take a deep breath and hold it down tight...press your diaphragm down onto your band. That helps me, and is easier than that damn-dog-yoga thing. I HAVE done that, though, and it helps. :D

How are you doing? You posted this night before last...oops! I'm slow....

Oh, and I for sure have sipped a bit of Sprite to gurgle and bubble it up or down. Too much is baaad, but a little sip? I've done it. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

I have intentionally swallowed air, it goes down and comes back up quickly and no more gas pain.

Thanks everyone- I guess a little soda for medicinal purposes is ok in an emergency. I finally got comfortable, no more stuck feeling. I've been super careful. It is such a wierd feeling, it can't be explained to anyone else except bandsters.

Stitchey, you had your band in Everett. That is where I am going and I am wondering if they will give me all this information. I have only started hearing about all the bad that can happen. OUCH!!

Hello Carla
NWWLS will give you lots of information, including diet before and after. They will give you a ton of information. I got a lot of paper information. And they are extremely receptive to your questions. Most of the women there have been banded, so you can call at any time to talk and know that they know what they are talking about. There really is very little bad that will happen, although there is some that CAN happen. I haven't had much bad. I've experienced the golf ball, the sliming, etc., but nothing really bad. No slippage, no erosion. Dr. Watkins met with me and answered all my questions. I used their psych (Linda something). They have nutritionist that help. IMO you have chosen the very best surgery center. And Jessie Ahroni is the only fill nurse I have seen, but I'm sure that I would be comfortable with any of them.

Hope this helps.

Poor Diva, hope you got some sleep.

If it is a feeling of needing to burp but can't, then a swallow of air usually fixes it for me.

But if I am stuck, swallowing anything is deadly painful. That down dog yoga thing helps, but for the most part I try to suffer if through or cough it up if I can't stand it any longer. I cry for the blessing of a slime or PB, but that hasn't happened to me post-band (I did have some slimes / PBs pre-banding due to poor eating habits - usually bread). Thankfully that doesn't happen very often, and hopefully I am learning the stop signals to avoid future episodes.

It's funny how we get used to being in the band. When I first asked this question I was in a panic. I'm thinking and pacing "They said no carbonation!!! eeeek! I will ruin the band! I will be forever stuck!" No kidding, I was pretty freaked.

Now when I get stuck now and then if nothing else works I will just go for some bubbles. Burping a real good one (which btw, I never did in my life before being banded) will almost always help to get unstuck. Basically I'm not so scared anything I do will mess the band up.

I still don't drink bubbles/carbonation except in states of stubborn stuckness. (Say that five times fast...states of stubborn stuckness, states of stubborn stuckness hee hee hee) But as time goes by I am more comfortable with my decisions.

I walk. Sometimes jump. Hold my breath and count to 20.

I wish I had paid more attention 10 years ago when my step-daughter that could burp the alpahbet tried to teach me how to burp :/
