Make it light (yogurt, pudding, protien shakes, cream/baked potato, chips and dip :D j/k).

Avoid anything heavy or a stomach irritant the day of the fill.

And remember, AFTER the fill you need to do 24 hours liquids, 24 hours mushy/soft, then back to regular schedule foods.

FYI: you may want to bring your own bottled water for the fill. Most of the time you will need to drink several ounces before you leave... and you wouldnt want to drink their nasty faucet water. :)

Thanks guys, esp the hint about bringing my own water. I hope it goes well! I have to see the nutrionist at 3 so I have plenty of time to wander around and see if I am too tight. (gee I haven't wondered about being too tight since I was 17, totally different situation though).

Ha ha @ Diva!

Seriously though, either call your doctor or follow paula's advice. It's almost dead on with what my doctor recommends.

And, DEFINITELY bring your own water. Ick @ the tap water.

My fill doctor says nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to the fill. After that, 24 hours on clear liquids, then 6 days on full liquids, then back to your regular diet.

My SURGEON says, 3 days of full liquids, 3 days of mushies, then back to solids.

I had my second (real) fill today. I'm going with what my surgeon recommends! lol

ok, I laughed out-loud at this one.
Being tight, injecting needles, wide open... it does sound a little misleading, huh?

Diva, the idea is to make sure there is NOTHING in your pouch when you get a fill. Thats what the aim is!
The first time I got a fill, i had no idea about a 'no food before fill' rule. So I ate 2 slices of homemade pizza about 2 hours before my visit.
It caused alot of indigestion - ALOT - but Im still here to tell the tale!

::sigh:: I just had to not eat for about 6 hours pre-fill, ok to drink. My virgin fill is at 1:50 pm. We shall see. Maybe I took the day off and going into Boston for nuthin. I had 2 tiny fish cakes at 6:00 pm last night and I still feel stuck! It happened twice before but earlier in the mushy game with tuna salad and chicken. It did go down eventually but this is bad timing to say the least.
Been drinking water, tea, water, tea, water, tea-you get the picture. I've also been peeing like a racehorse. I've stretched, held my breath, did the hokey pokey and I turned myself around. Thats what its all about.

Hey Diva,

The day of my first scheduled fill, I ate scrambled eggs and got HORRIBLY stuck. It was, literally, a 6 hour PB fest. It was my first PB. Now, naturally, I'm terrified of fills, eggs and PB's, and probably will be for LIFE!! Do I need to add that I called and cancelled the fill?

I can laugh about it now, but it was really bad and I don't plan on eating scrambled eggs ever again. I eat egg salad, eggs over easy, devilled eggs . . . but I'll never eat another one scrambled. My doc explained that when you cook an egg over high heat, really quickly, it turns them into solid blocks of dry protein, which, if you look in a medical dictionary under PB, is the definition! lol

I made out ok! The doc said everything would work its way down eventually. I am on liquids today and tomorrow.
The fill was way easier than I ever thought. My own surgeon did it. At NEMC we have a choice: your own surgeon on his/her time or a Friday fill clinic where the 3 surgeons, one PA and any fellows rotate their time. I chose my own surgeon since he put the bugger in, he must know where it is! I lay down, picked up my shirt and voila! It took all of 2 minutes. 1.5 in a 4 cc band. No pre-needle to dull pain, I felt a little something thats all. NEMC does a routine flouro every year. They'll only do a fill flouro if there is a problem or suspected problem.
So now I am writing on the blackboard I will not eat scrambled eggs I will not eat scrambled eggs.
Thanks everyone!!!!!

Just a thought on the eggs. I always scramble mine with a little mayo mixed in. It adds moisture and make them easier to eat and tastier too.

JustPaul said..which was good advice for me, to not eat or drink anything for about 4 hours prior to the fill. The food and drink may give you some restriction and it could effect the true restriction of your fill. I didn't eat that whole morning or drink since the night before and I was filled up to 2.8 and I still have quite alot of restriction. I can eat canned tuna, veggies, applesauce (chewed up very very well) but no steak and no chicken. No pastas either. I can have about 2 - 3 bites of fish and 1 - 2 bites of veggies before I am really full.

Thanks. To elaborate more, if you have warm beverages before a fill, it will open you up, and you have a greater likleyhood of ending up too tight... cold beverages before, and it tightens you up, and you may end up with a fill that is not enough restriction.

Best advice, as Telly noted... nothing from the night before, and no beverages at LEAST 4 hours before. I'v found this to work well, and my doc agrees it helps to get optimal results.
