Ugh, I'm sorry you're going through this. Sometimes, walking around a lot will help get things moving along. Or, if you have some papaya enzyme chewable tablets, that may help as well. Be patient, it will eventually go away.

I don't have any papaya enzyme tablets...guess I'll be getting some though! Where can I buy those?
I finally just stuck my finger down my throat...yuck. First time I've ever done that in my life! It eased the pressure a bit but it's still painful. Does this mean that food is stuck in my pouch or esophogus???

You can get papaya enzyme tablets at Walgreens or GNC. Make sure you get the chewables though.

I'm glad that the pressure has subsided, but in the future, please don't force the vomiting. You want to avoid that at all possible. I know that it hurts, but it's best not to vomit.

That painful pressure typically means that food was sitting at the bottom of your esophagus with nowhere to go.

also, because this has now happened be sure to spend the next 24 hours on liquids. your stoma will be very sensitive and swollen, and you could cause more pb'ing. just be very cautious and very careful. i hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for you help!!! I can't believe it has lasted this long...2 1/2 hours so far. Is this normal for a PB?

this is a hard pb. you want to make sure you do not induce vomiting, like tricia said, because you can cause your band to slip. vomiting is no good.

try walking around with your hands up above your head, or just walking. the pain could be residule from the stuck chicken.

do not try to wash it down. you will just make youself stuck more. make sure it is down and gone. then try some warm and hot liquids. it will help to sooth it all.

I induced the vomiting because I was so desperate! I've never felt this much pain and I can't believe it's still painful. My throat keeps making these funny gurgling noises and I can't seem to burp even though it feels like I want to. I NEVER want this feeling again!!

You don't think I'm still having this pain in my esophogus because my band slipped do you???? Could that be why I'm still in pain? Now I'm nervous!

sounds like you are still stuck. just don't drink anything. it will pass sometime. if it lasts over 24 hours, i would call your doc.

how was the chicken prepared? how big a bite was it? did you chew enough? were you waiting a minute between bites? these are things you need to focus on to figure out how to never have this happen again.

no, it sounds like a hard pb. that is all. don't be nervous. just try to relax.

Thanks so much! Everyone has been so helpful. I don't know what I would do without the website!!! I certainly did eat too fast and the bites were too big. I hope I get the hang of this soon!!! I think I've learned my lesson after this PB and I'll be more aware of my eating. I've had that golf ball feeling before but it only lasts for 10 minutes. I guess that would be a mini-PB where this was a major, nasty, horrible PB!

I feel so bad for you that you had the bad PB. I have had a couple but only for 5-10 minutes. It has happened to me even when I have chewed and chewed and took my time. My band is fickle sometimes and sometimes I am ok and others the first bite will cause discomfort. I really take my time now and make sure my meats are very moist or I won't eat it and the bites are supper small.

I hope you are feeling better. Please don't eat anything solid for 24 hours. Give your stoma time to rest. Drink protein shakes or very soft foods. I would just do liquids for 24 hours.

Hugs,
Tina

I can't believe it's been almost 4 hours and my esophigos is still killing me.
I feel like I have a ton of burps in my chest that just won't come out and it hurts, like built up gas. I'm getting very upset about this whole thing. Will it ever end?

I have had one PB and I ate some stringy raost that got stuck, I didn't quite have the pain your in, but it lasted about 36 hours. I couldn't keep anything down, not even liquids. Just as I was about to call the Dr, I had a hard hiccup spell (about 2 dozen) and I was fine after that. I get the hiccups were cause by the food finally going down. I understand how scary it can be, but like the others stated, I think you will be fine. Hope you feel better soon

Berry, when I have to burp but cannot, I lie on my stomach on a hard surface (e.g. wood floor) and this helps force the air up. When you feel gurgling or air coming up, turn over and sit up, bending slightly over your knees. This should help expel the air and you should burp...loudly!

Amy is right about the liquids too. You have obviously irritated your stoma and it needs to relax. So, drink those warm/hot liquids to reduce the swelling.

berry the others have all given great advise, I jsut wanted to say I ams sorry that this has happened- a lot of us have experienced this and understand how painful and scarey it is. the warm fluid may help to relax the area and soothe things- jsut ry very small amounts. If it lasts more than 24 hours or gets unbearable, at least ring your Dr for advice. But definately stick to fluids only for a while when this passes as your esophagus is going to be really irritated and prone to more pb's

Berry this is the worst and I hope by the time you are reading this you're feeling so much better. Try and stay calm about it because getting anxious tightens things up. Walking and breathing as deep as you can will help and apart from that let it run its course and then stick to liquids for a couple of days to let your system calm down. Feel better soon...

I feel much better today. Last night around 9:30 I drank a couple of small sips of hot tea I ended up vomiting and everything came up! I felt so much better after that. Other than child birth and kidney stones it was the worse pain I've ever felt. Never want to go through that again. I was cooking chicken for a church dinner and I tasted a few pieces of it, it was dry. I obviously ate too much and the pieces were too big. It didn't help that I was in a hurry and distracted!! I've learned my lesson to slow down and pay attention to what I'm eating. Thanks to everyone for helping me out!!!! It helps so much using this website!

i am glad it is over. just make sure you only do warm liquids for the next 24 hours. i owuld even try mushies after that for 24 hours. you need to make sure your stomach is feeling a lot better before going back to normal eating.

Berry, sorry you had such an awful PB experience. Good to hear that the obstacle cleared.

I absolutely second Funny's advice about staying on liquids for at least 24 hours. Sip plenty of room temp or warm water as well so that you stay hydrated. Don't rush back to mushies / solids, just take it easy for a few days.

For your reference, here's some great advice I got from b2gers last time I was stuck:

Doing a "downward dog" yoga move can help to dislodge the item and burp it up. To do it you bend over from waist and put your hands on the floor, put your head down between your arms and lean back so that your ams and body are in a straight line.

Or try a variation of the downward dog by hanging your body over the arm of your couch (with your lower abdomen over the arm of the couch rather than chest or ribs). Put your hands on the floor in front of you, and head down between your arms (almost like you are doing a head stand). It helps to have something on the floor to catch whatever might come up.

Better luck next time!

glad to hear you feel better, dry chicken and eating when distracted is a truely evil mixture- once bitten i know you will never fall into this trap again. Intersting to here about the yoga move, I have not heard of that one before but would certaily give it a try if needed. I would take my time getting back to normal food at the moment Berry, fluids and mushie for a couple of days and only progress if you have no discomfort with those

don't worry Goanna, if I did try something like that I would be very careful, i am not partial to falling and getting stuck on the floor, its not very dignified
