Hi,

I am the biggest chicken when it comes to pain, but it was not bad...I fainted because I have a phobia of large needles, but the second time I got a fill I dind't look and I was good to go!

It's a bit uncomfortable, and you get a lidocane injection first, then he puts the needle in. But it's not painful!

The numbing shot feels like a bee sting and you can't feel the needle that they use to access your port. But if you get grossed out easily don't look at it!

My doctor doesn't do a numbing shot. The needle he uses is not that big and it really isn't painful - at least not to me. It is less painful than getting a normal shot in the arm (except for my first fill where he had a little problem finding the port. Even then, it just burned a little - not horrible at all). But I think a lot would depend on the exact location of your port, how well 'anchored' it is, the amount of abdominal fat you have, etc etc etc etc.

At first I couldn't fill my port - - but didn't try to because it just kind of grossed me out for some reason! I can feel it now that I have lost some weight - - - which may also be why my 2nd and 3rd fills were much quicker and the port was much easier to access.

Good LUCK!!!!!! I'm sure it will be fine!

I hate needles as well. The first shot for numbing is the only thing I felt. I was surprised. After the fill was done I asked, "is that it?". I told the doctor, "gee, all that apprehension for nothing"! :eyerub:

newmesoon, I am terrified when it comes to needles, and my surgeon doesn't numb you before a fill. I can honestly say that it doesn't hurt - it just feels weird.

No it doesn't hurt. My port tends to turn a little and can be a nuisance to find so sometimes there can be a bit of pushing and pummeling to find it but that doesnt hurt either and the needles are nothing to bother about. You'll be absolutely fine, don't worry.

My doctor doesn't use anything to numb you but in the beginning my fills were not painful at all. I was so scared I would sweat prior to him coming in the office and would cry this same song everytime, "why would I chose a surgery that required a needle at every office visit." But to my surprise, it never hurt until I had lost about 100lbs & then the doctor said all the fatty tissues have gone from around my port, that's why they started feeling uncomfortable.

You will be fine, don't stress or pay tolls twice, as my DH says.

My doctor numbed me the first time, but not the second and third. The first time I didn't feel anything at all. To the point that I didn't even realize he had put a bandaid on. Without the numbing it wasn't bad.

There are times that I can feel my port more than others (through my skin). My doctor said that this is normal.

My doc uses the numbing spray. I just felt a little pressure. It wasn't even as painful as a regular shot. Don't worry, you will be surprised at how little pain you feel!

I can fill my port if I lay on my stomach the wrong way. But when I had my first fill it didn't hurt because he did numb me first but he had a hard time finding my port at first
