Are you on a plateau or just losing and re-gaining the same few pounds every week? If so, join me in the Plateau-Busting Challenge.
Below is Dr. Fox's Plateau-Busting Diet (http://www.digitalhorsewoman.com/plateaubusting.htm) found online. I've never "truly" followed it, but I have followed a modified version of it and had decent results. Let's see how we do when we truly follow it. However, I think for this challenge, we should follow it for one month. Who's with me?
Start off posting your weight as of today (3/11/07) and then update with the following every Saturday:

Ok, I told Tricia I would do this with her so here I am. I sound really enthusiastic don't I?
I told Tricia that I think the diet sounds great - except for #6. *laughs*
I messed up yesterday, but I had a good excuse! *grins*
So here I am, weighing in at 200 on the nose. I've been hovering around this point for months now. I know that it's all my own bad choices and lack of exercise that has built this platuea that I'm perching on. So.. it's time to get out the bulldozer and start tearing it down. After 14 months of doing the same ole, same ole... its time for something new to jump start my amazing journey down into the 180s, the 160s, and finally the 140s! I'm setting my goals in 20 pound incriments. That seems SO do-able to me!
So, Ms. Fupa Buster, where's the cow? I'm ready for my first 3oz of protein! Mwahahaha!!!
3/12/07
200 pounds
I'm getting a fill this afternoon...so I guess I'll be sipping some broth for dinner. But I want to eat the cow with P'Nut!
Tricia K.
03-12-2007, 11:18 AM
Fupa Buster? I have NO idea what you're talking about. *looks up* :D
Anyway, I'm glad to see you here, P'Nut! As far as your first 3 oz. of protein, go eat some of that dreaded cottage cheese (ick)! Hee hee.
Good luck with your fill today, Jessica.

Ok, I'm eating my cottage cheese. :)
I have a question about the protein supplement. Is that in addition to the 3oz of high-protein foods, five times a day? Cause, this 3oz of cottage cheese has 9 grams of protein. If I use that as an average amount of protein per food I choose thru the day, that will be 135 grams of protein! Adding 45 more seems dangerously high doesn't it?
PhotoNut
03-12-2007, 11:57 AM
Actually, I just talked to Dawg about this. He reminded me that we were on a similar diet a few years ago that our trainer has us eating 150g per day for a month while we were doing very beginner weight training. Dawg said its only dangerous if it gets up into the 200-250g range, but we also shouldn't do this diet for more than a month. Agreed?
I'm not sure I'll make it a whole month...but I'll definitely try it for 10 days. :)

Shhh, Jess. *snicker* That's my thinking too, but don't tell the Fupa Buster!! This is the same technique I use to get myself to do things I don't wanna do. Example - I was just on the dreadmill (yay me!) and planned to walk for 15 mins. At about the 6 min mark, I was ready to quit! LOL But I kept telling myself I could do 10, then I could quit if I wanted. I ended up doing the whole 15!
Now, to accomplish that 3 more times today!

:neener: No MORE excuses!! LOL...anyway, Susan, I agree with what Dawg said about not going over 150g per day of protein for this month-long challenge.
As far as everyone doing it for a full month, that's up to you. I just want people to at least try and see if this plan works. I'm committed to a full month though.

I think I did pretty well for my first day of Reform School! I didnt do the protein shakes, I'm trying to get past the gag thing that happens whenever I reach for the huge jug of protein powder. I ate ONLY hig-protein foods though. Not one carb crossed my lips today! I had cottage cheese, fish, chicken, and beef.
I loved eating the 3oz meals!! Today is the first day in MONTHS that I didn't feel overwhelming urges to snack constantly. I wasn't hungry between my mini-meals! I didn't feel that uncomfortable overstuffed pouch stuff, but I did have one minor sliming incident on the fish. I have to chew slower!
I drank all my water and did 15 mins of exercise. I would have done more exercise, but.. well.. I didn't. So there. LOL!
My total today:
925 calories, 79g protein
6-16.9oz bottles of water (3.2 quarts)
15 mins on treadmill

Yeah, well today I had Ethan all day so no treadmill and I'm pooped!
Maybe I'll drag my lazy butt and my Dawg to the gym and swim. That sounds like a relaxing way to end the day.
So far today I've had about 3oz of hamburger topped with some sort of cheese and grilled onions. LindaV, Idahobeauty, Ethan and I had lunch together at Denny's. I ordered the patty melt/no bread and a side salad. I brought the salad home for the family to eat. I've been drinking iced tea all day, in addition to 2qt of water. I'm just not hungry, which is awesome!
Maybe later, after the gym, I'll try to gag down a protein shake. Blech.

Ha ha! I'd like to see my PA's face when I see him next, when I tell him I've been following the fupa-be-gone diet. He'd probably think it was hysterical.
I went ahead and started. I had only had a small, late breakfast, so I drank a couple bottles of water and just said WTH and started. Luckily, I had just bought cheese and turkey and ham yesterday and I always have cottage cheese. I wish you could have lettuce, though, that would make it a whole lot easier. We'll see. I may fall off this wagon by tomorrow. Something's gotta give. Maybe this will work.

Oh yeah, should the protein supplement be low carb and only mixed with water or yogurt. It says nothing about milk. Yuck. I actually bought low-carb whey protein (I'll drink with my nose closed I hate the smell). I think I unconsiously purchased all this stuff yesterday knowing I needed to do this.

I wouldn't worry about the protein supplement. Just make it like you normally would. It's minimal in the grand scheme of things anyway.

Ha! my thoughts exactly.
I started yesterday and I swear I'm down from 207.4 to 205.7 this morning. I was 205.7 three weeks ago. I got a fill and gained weight. I'm so confused.
I may not stick with it for 10 days, but apparently something is working. Of course, it might be my weird losing style too. I lose in chunks. I'll go for a week or two or three and lose nothing and then lose 4 pounds in a day. I don't know why.
I am going to attribute this loss to the "FUPA-be-gone diet", though.
Yay Melissa! I lose weight in spurts like that too, it's kind of frustrating. I'm sitting here eating my cottage cheese...hope it pays off again this week.

FUPA be gone sounds like a bug spray tho lol I spoke with a plastic surgeon about it all, and he said that I can have a vag lift when i get my complete body lift. he even does a little lipo if it needs it. I asked him how I tell him what I want it to be like, and he handed me a playboy. Rob piped up and said "Yeah we have that one" LOL dork.
I decided that this time next year I am going to be in a small bikini and proud to be wearing it. :D FUPA BE GONE!!!
I have done well. last night i screwed up and had popcorn. but today i am on track. and tomorrow we go shopping. In fact I am going to the butcher shop first. gonna get some nice steaks cut into the right portions, as well as chicken breasts, and get some fresh thick cut bacon. I have enough fish to feed an army already so i am good with that. lack of carbs will cause you to be tired, irritable and hungry for about the first 5 days. after that your body starts to burn off fat, and you will see a real boost in energy.

lack of carbs will cause you to be tired, irritable and hungry for about the first 5 days. after that your body starts to burn off fat, and you will see a real boost in energy.
How ironic. I just had an hour-long conversation with my son, Ryan, about this very thing. Ryan is a certified personal trainer with a lot of knowledge about physical fitness and nutrition.
When I told him that I was trying to eat only protein for the next 10 days, he became very concerned and asked what I was hoping to achieve by doing this. I explained that we were attempting to bust thru plateaus by completely eliminating carbs from our diet.
He then told me that the only way to truly bust thru a plateau and continue to achieve the weight loss goals is to increase exercise while eating a well balanced diet of protein, carbs, and fats. (He recommended 50/30/20).
The body must have carbs in order to effectively metabolize protein. Without those carbs the high amounts of protein are going to just pass thru the body increasing the amount of waste in the intestines while decreasing our energy, leaving us feeling sluggish and tired.
While it is true that we could lose a pound or two while we are adhering to the no-carb diet. Once we reintroduce carbs, our bodies will attempt to store them as fat because of the recent history of lacking in this fuel that is so vital to our bodies. This will most likely result in a weight gain of the pounds that were lost, and could even bring a few additional pounds with them because carbs are easily converted to fat. (in the form of a "fat ass" to quote Ryan lol)
He recommends that we all focus on upping the physical demands we put on our bodies rather than leaning to the "quick fixes" that often times seem so appealing when we are discouraged.
I hope everyone, especially Tricia, understands that I'm not posting this to make anyone feel bad or to run down anyone's attempts to reach their goals. I simply felt I would be failing my responsibility to each of you by not sharing what I've learned, and then letting you make your own decisions based on these facts.
That being said, I have every intention of staying with the Plateau Busting Challenge but I will be using a modified version. I will be adding fresh vegetables, starches (potatoes) and some grains (cereal) to the increased proteins. I will also be adding exercise, IF I can make my lazy ass get with the program!
Funny recently tried the Medifast diet to help her kick-start her weight loss efforts after a time of wavering from her goals. Unfortunate for her and lucky for us, she discovered some flaws in the Medifast diet that changed her opinion of that plan. I, too, started out not knowing all of the facts but now that I've learned more, I will redirect my efforts while keeping my same goals.
The down and dirty of it all is this. In order to be healthy individuals, we must eat well balanced diets and get plenty of exercise. During our talk tonight, Ryan said something that really hit home with me. He said that man is not going to outsmart the body. We were designed to eat the meat that we chased down and caught, and to eat the plants that we toiled to grow. What's happened to America is that we not only stopped chasing and toiling for our food, we now sit down while its brought to us in abundance. With our bands we are confronting the abundance issue, which brings us back into balance on that end of things. However, we must not forget that we still require the physical exertion to bring about the full balance of health that we all so strongly desire.
Thanks for listening! Now go grab your spears and join me in a hunt for dinner! *cackles*

I went out shopping last night. I bought pork chops, small lean steaks, chicken, and best of all......
BACON!
I also got some cheeses and cottage cheese. a little sour cream for use on the drier meats.
As for what Pnut posted, this diet is not totally without carbs. Cottage Cheese and peanut butter have carbs in them. you can continue to do this, and measure in the right amount of carbs to be pretty balanced. As with atkins, you should not fall below 20g of protein or you will have health side effects. This is easy to get with the cottage cheese, and some condiments.
I won't be able to weigh in on sat, but i have noticed that i feel a lot better, my sluggishness is gone, and my pants are lose this morning. yay!

oh, and the funniest thing, i am in the checkout line putting all the stuff on the belt. The woman behind me says "Atkins huh? That is good! You certainly need it!"
LOL
Way to go at trying to be snotty. I am aware I am fat still, but why do people feel the need to point it out? And what did she look like? trash...total trash. I may have a ghetto booty (tricia and telly can attest to this. it really sticks out and is very round) and have hanging skin, but i do not smell, i was dressed nice even for just running to the grocery store, my teeth were white and my hair had been washed in the last decade. Call me stupid, but i think i'd rather be fat than look like a crack ho.

Oh my god, Funny. My jaw dropped when I read that. Of all the damn nerve! I swear, I'm not going to try to be nice to people like that any longer. I'm just going to come right out and say something like, "That was a very rude and hurtful thing to say."
As an example.. yesterday LindaV, Idahobeauty, LindaV's son and I went out to lunch together. As we were leaving, we walked by an older man who was sitting alone at one of those tall round tables. He looked at me and then his eyes dropped right to my boobs. I said, quite loudly, "That guy just checked out my boobs!" I didn't look back to see if it embarassed him, but it sure felt good to call it like it was ya know? I didn't give any opinion about what the person did, just stated a fact.

I would be shocked beyond belief if someone did something like that to me or anyone I know. That is so ugly!!! I would never do anything like that. I am very guilty of gossipping an talking chit... but that is just downright ugly!!!!
OMG!! Funny, I am NOT amused with that crack ho! Why do people think *hit like that is ok to say?? Not cool.

Funny, what a bit*h! I'd have probably had to have given her my business card for 1-800-f***-off! It's shocking what people feel justified in saying to others.
That's the best thing about getting older (not old). You gain the maturity to know that it doesn't matter what others think so much, but that you have the intelligence and or life experience to teach them a thing or two or at least let them know how rude/obnoxious/ignorant, etc. they really are. I just tell it like it is, now. I used to NEVER be like that when I was young. As I've matured, I don't take crap from anyone. I usually try to beat people with my brain and my tongue. It's really sad when your opponent is so lacking that they can't fight back with anything substantive.
Sometimes if you point out to someone that you wouldn't tolerate your children saying something like that to someone, they realize that what they've said is way out of line.
You could also take the shocking, humorous route and say "Yeah, you should have seen me 150 pounds ago." <snerk>

LOL wow, that touched a nerve with all y'all. I get rude comments all the time. but i am rude right back. My comeback to her was "You mean this won't put more weight on me?" the checkout lady laughed. the rude chick kept her mouth shut. This chit doesn't bother me anymore. I do get it a lot. but like i said, i am pretty rude right back. I take pretty good care of myself, and my hair and makeup are always done. for my size, i have a nice wardrobe, and i have a lot of confidence most of the time. these people don't get to me anymore, but i know that they are saying these types of things because they feel low about themselves. so i usually capitalize on that and make them feel even shittier. hehehehe

As for the plateau busting challenge, i am doing great!! And I bought a scale yesterday. LOL I just couldn't take it anymore. So I am right at 220, which means i have lost at least 3 pounds since I last saw my fill doctor. so we will see where this diet takes me. i am craving carbs big time, and i just ruined rob this morning with snapping at him and putting him down. he knew it was the food, and i did too, but i couldn't stop. now i feel bad. lol i will be glad when this part is over. At least he took his cookies to work finally. he kept leaving them here and i swear! everywhere i went in the house it smelled like cookies!! lol

Ugh, I've added some carbs, but I will continue to try - I will cycle down the carbs this time instead of going cold turkey, because I felt like I was going to faint in the shower and I had a headache for three days and was an even bigger bit*h than usual. I felt like total crap. I am heading into PMS territory, so I don't want to end up axing the family from PMS and lack of carbs. Not the way to end up on the news...
My husband brought home four giant brownies from a client meeting at work - my kids won't eat them because they hate nuts. Then last night at Cub Scouts, two of my boys won baked goods in the raffle - peanut butter brownies and chocolate chip cookies! Gaaah! I had bought fresh croissants for the family for dinner the other day, so I have four clear plastic containers with delicious looking stuff in them that I can't eat. How did that happen?
I have got to get into onderland soon or I am going to lop off a limb to get there. This is ridiculous.

Okay, I've creeped up a little. I need to hook myself up to a water bottle and catheter while walking endless miles on the treadmill followed by a 15 mile bike ride to the gym where I take a kickboxing class with a personal assistant squirting more water in my mouth while chewing sour apple gum and spitting. I can't seem to shake this fluid! Damn the female body and impending PMS!
Besides that, I think I need to get myself back to my Endocrinologist. Something MUST be wrong with my thyroid meds. No one is this damn slow to lose the same 4-5 pounds. 205 to 209. 206 to 210, back down to 205. What the hell is wrong with me? I'm starting to get VERY discouraged. I did eat some carbs to keep me from passing out, but I have tried to keep the protein up, the carbs and calories not too high and when I start to feel hungry or woozy, I have a dab of cottage cheese and a couple of nuts. I'm trying to do everything right...
I dread going to the doctor to weigh in next week after a month of GREAT restriction and not losing! Le sigh.
I'm sorry to hear of your scale woes P'Nut and Melissa...I know it's frustrating!
I actually added quite a few carbs this week, but I also worked really, really hard at the gym. I'm down to 185.8 this morning! So -2 this week, -7 since we started!!

I'm going to skip out on the Plateau-Busting Challenge. I've decided to change my goal weight to 165 and I'm 3 pounds away so I'm going to just consider myself maintaining at this point. I think my body is telling me that this is where I need to stop so I'm listening to it.
Good luck to ALL of you!!
That's awesome Tricia!! I think my body is ready for some carbs now...so I'm done with the challenge for now. :) I started out at 192.8 and today I was 184 so I lost 8.8 pounds!
