View Full Version : For those who work, how long were you off after the surgery?

I'm just wondering, for planning's sake, how long were most of you who work off from work? I work at a sit down job, in front of a computer all day. Not at all strenuous. I haven't told my employer yet about all this, being I actually have my first consultation with the surgeon on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, I haven't told anyone except my husband (who went to the seminar with me) and my mother-in-law (who's wonderful!). I guess I'm afraid of all the negative comments I might hear.

Gentlehealer -
My workplace knew that I was having surgery, but I told them it was not serious or life threatining, but I really didn't want to talk about it. They were very caring and supportive (and curious). I did tell them after the fact, but wouldn't have had to.
The reason I told them it was surgery was I didn't want to fabricate a lie. Telling them ahead of time that I didn't want to talk about it put off the questions - other than "how are you feeling?" If someone would be crude enough to ask what the surgery was, I would just say "It's personal and I'd prefer not to discuss it." or the ever popular, "Why do you need to know?" That should shut them down.
I also have a sit down computer job. I was off work for most of a week, and then went back half time for a week. I think if I was younger, a week would have been enough, but I'm not *younger.*

I work a pretty easy job too but I drive a ton! I took a week off but I would have really liked to take a few extra days. I just don't think I was ready yet and so 10 days would have been good for me.

I took two weeks off, but would say that I would have been ready to go back after 10 days. I took the two weeks because work did not know I was having surgery so I wanted plenty of time to recover.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going to wait to see how the consultation goes tomorrow before saying anything to the people at work. It all depends on what the surgeon says, the pre-approval from the ins. co, etc. When I actually have a date, I will tell them at least that I'm going to have surgery. Thanks again! chris

I was out for 4 days, but I was dying to get back to work. I was up and walking around hours after the surgery and begging them to take out the catheter, the begging became threatening to do it myself within an hour or two.
Keep in mind everyone is different, I could have worked that day, but some people need 7 days, its all about comfort.

I had surgery on Tuesday and was back to work the following Monday. I sit at a desk in front of a puter all day so it was no biggie. I was sore and got up and walked around every hour or so but I was fine after the 2nd day back.

I work as a Direct Support Professional. (Similiar to a nurse aide). I took 10 days off and then was on "light" duty for two weeks after that. It hurt to bend at the waist and lifting anything for about a month was out of the question. Best of luck!

I had my surgery on Thursday and on Monday (in the afternoon because in the morning i had an appointment with the doctor) i was back working. But I am sitting all day in front of a computer, so it was not completely discomfortable. If it was for me I would have take 1 more day, but I think its more on how you are feeling :)
