Hi everyone! I'm back from Turks & Caicos and officially scuba certified! My dh and I had such a blast scuba diving -- and I'm happy to report no problems at all with the band! We did 4 dives, saw a reef shark (and I didn't freak out), sting ray, crabs, eels, and all sorts of unusual and colorful critters.

As for the mosquitos, the only time I was bitten was when I didn't have my spray on. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions; I went with catnip oil (mixed with peppermint oil and sprayed all over my body), Cutter Advanced (with Picaridin) on my exposed areas, and garlic pills. I got about 10 bites, so I don't think the garlic pills did anything. I loaded up on them but when I didn't have the spray, I still got bitten.

Unfortunately, the whole journey started off horribly when I accidentally took too much cough syrup right before my flight. I took a swig of cough syrup w/ codeine so I could sleep on the red-eye (without the dosing cup because I was hurrying to get it in my checked baggage so it didn't get confiscated), and apparently I took too much. I started to feel dizzy and nauseated as soon as I went through security. By the time we boarded the flight, I was in a wheelchair and vomiting into a barf bag. I vomited through the entire 2 flights and by the end I was dry-heaving. It was the pitts.

Anyway, I wanted to thank everyone for the input on scuba and mosquitos. I really appreciate this entire group and the support and lack of nastiness on this board.

What a cool trip that would've been! I'm glad that you were able to get through it without too many bites, and that you got to see so many cool critters underwater.

Sorry you were barfing, but glad that it all turned around from there. Welcome back!

Ick on the barfing cough syrup! Oh how horrible to be nauseated. But it sounds as if the rest of your trip was FAB! Wow! You are scuba certified! WTG!!!

I'm so excited to be certified. I tried to do it years ago but it was in November in California and the water was VERY cold. I had a full wetsuit, gloves, hood, everything, but the water was so cold that my lips got numb and I couldn't get a fix on the regulator. We were doing our "out of air" exercise and I really was sucking in water! It was scary and it was the pitts. That was 12 years, 2 babies, and about 75 lbs ago.

I never would have tried again if it hadn't been for the weight loss. I was still uncomfortable being as heavy as I am, but I know the next time I go and every time thereafter it'll get easier.

Way to go Gadgetlady. Sounds like you had a wonderful time, despite the miserable start and a great achievement to boot.

Wow, scubadiving! That is great.

I have to tell you though, the title of this thread has got to be one of the most intriguing I have ever seen. Cough medicine with codeine also makes me sick. I feel your pain.

Were you able to take any pictures while diving? It must have been so beautiful.

We took a few pictures, but I haven't downloaded them from the camera yet. Unfortunately, PADI rules say we couldn't take them while we were getting certified, so that nixed 2 of our dives. Then my husband's fin was lightly touching some coral when he was taking a shot of an eel, so our instructor wouldn't allow him to take any more photos after that or on the next dive at all. She said she wanted him to have a better handle on buoyancy before trying to take photos. I asked if I could take them and she nixed that, too. She said we should practice in a pool before our next dive.
