I've been reading and thinking a lot about what to do when that feeling comes over me--you know the one--when you think if you don't have that particular food, bread, pasta, cookies in my case--you're just gonna lose it?
I also thought about what some bandsters have said about finding something else to do to get your mind out of that neighborhood.
I decided to do the exercise as suggested in the article, Are You Afraid of Being Thin? While I'm not afraid of that, I think it's a great exercise, and you know what? I didn't want cookies while I was doing it, and still don't. That's not to say it won't change, but one minute at a time, it's happening.
I've decided to write down my fears, and again, while I don't think I'm afraid of being thin, there are definitely obstacles in my way. I thought I'd share them, and hope some of you will do the same. Here goes.
1. I'm afraid of being thin because I won't be able to eat all the cookies I want.
2. I'm afraid of being thin because even now when I try not to eat, I feel like I'm depriving myself.
3. I'm afraid of being thin because deprivation reminds me of my childhood, when sometimes there wasn't enough, or anything, to eat.
4. I'm afraid of being thin because it doesn't matter to me how I look on the outside.
5. I'm afraid of being thin becauseI'm not sure if there is anything to replace food.
6. I'm afraid of being thin because I love the taste of cookies, and two, or four are not enough.
7. I'm afraid of being thin because I'm not really sure I believe in myself.
8. I'm afraid of being thin because once I get there, then what?
9. I'm afraid of being thin because it sometimes feels like it's too hard to get there.
10. I'm afraid of being thin because I'd still feel like there's something about me that won't allow me to feel good about myself, and people know I'm not worth it.
11. I'm afraid of being thin because even when I was thin as a kid, my brother still called me "fatso", so what's the difference?
12. I'm afraid of being thin because even when I was thin as a kid, my older relatives always found something to criticize, and not just my physical appearance.
13. I'm afraid of being thin because I know I'll have to exercise for maintainance, and I HATE exercise!!
14. I'm afraid of being thin because, while I'm much better, depression keeps me from feeling real joy, so why even try?
15. I'm afraid of being thin because change is not easy for me.
16. I'm afraid of being thin because I have lost and regained before. Why should this time be different, even with the band
17. I'm afraid of being thin because it would force me to make changes in some relationships.
18. I'm afraid of being thin because I might have to take charge of my life in ways I don't now.
19. I'm afraid of being thin because feelings that have been just under the surface, feelings I perhaps have no knowledge of, could rear their ugly little heads.
20. I'm afraid of being thin because I'd have to say no to some really good cooking, or at least, take much less.
21. I'm afraid of being thin because I don't want people's attitudes towards me to change just because I'm
smaller.
22. I'm afraid of being thin because it will force me to look at myself differently.
23. I'm afraid of being thin because I'll have to try even harder to focus on the positive.
24. I'm afraid of being thin because I'm not sure how to shut up that critic in my head.
25. I'm afraid of being thin because, maybeafter I peel off all these layers of fat, I really will be scared!!
Next??
