Okay, so I have bronchitis and haven't had a ciggie since Friday around Noon. What better time to quit for good, right? I can't imagine smoking one, but I still want to! I sure like breathing. Nothing like lung congestion to make you appreciate a deep breath. So, here I go. Kathy's Countdown to Quitting Smoking. I suppose it's now or never. I could use some occasional cheerleading and a place to post my progress. Thanks gang!

Go for it, Kathy!! I've never smoked, but had tons of friends who did or do. As more public places go "no smoking", you are limited to where you may smoke.
Your increase oxygen production will help you lose weight. I was at an oxygen level of 85 last March, and now after using a Cpak and breathing exercises, I am at 98. My energy increased, my voice is stronger, and my mind is sharper.
Friends seem to find success with the patch.
Good luck!! I'm cheering for you!!

Thanks Joyce. I'm suffering here. Feeling better and wiggin' out because I really would like to step out back. I just hate to lose my momentum, you know? I wonder if some patches would help? Dadgum, I have just about made it all the way through Day 2, right? I hate to add Nicotine at this point. SIGH. I have a headache and realized I'm on caffiene withdrawal, too. So I have a cuppa coffee now and I'm hoping that gets rid of my headache. SIGH. I want a ciggie. Ugh.

Good luck Kathy. I know how hard it is. I have never smoked, but saw my dad struggle to quit for many years and many methods. He finally quit for good about 12 years ago with the help of the patch when it first came out. Best of luck, we would all hate to see you get sick because of smoking and not be able to enjoy your new smaller self.

Excellent thought. All this work to get thin and I get emphysema, right? gawd.
My Dad quit 9 months ago and has gained a bunch of weight. Other than that, he feels so much better. He used Wellbutrin and it really took the edge off. I tried Wellbutrin back in the spring and got the Hives. Ick. I assume it was the Wellbutrin that gave me the hives? I should try it again. Obviously, I didn't quit back then.
Thanks for your good thoughts, Neal. You really look Fab.

I am so proud of you!! My partner smoked for over 20 years, and quit using the prescription zyban. Never mind her - I SWEAR BY IT!!!! It's actually Wellbutrin - an anti-depressant, talk about evening her out.....I loved it. It is a low dose wellbutrin, but it really helped keep her moods even, calm and helped with the whole no smoking thing. They were testing wellbutrin on some trial and they found that that one of the side effects was participants who smoked suddenly just lost all desire to smoke.
A note though, at least here in Tampa, she could get it prescribed through either her doctor or her dentist. Some insurance plans won't cover zyban, but will cover wellbutrin. Doctors will play the system and prescribe wellbutrin so that you are not out of pocket $300+ for the 3 month supply, but some are wary that they have a an anti-depressant in their medical record.
Take care!!

I quit smoking 30 years ago. It was hard, and I didn't use patches. What really helped me the most was changing my routine. That is try to revise the triggers that made me want to smoke. For instance, in the morning after I shoved DH and the kids out the door, I used to sit down with a cuppa' jo and a ciggie. So, instead, I started the laundry. The idea was to try to remove the triggers. And when the cravings got really bad, I would tell myself that I could have on in "x" number of minutes, but in the meantime I would find something else to do with my hands.
Good luck

YEAH KATHY!!! I just recently quit myself and I can tell you first hand it is not easy and it consumes your thoughts for a while. I tried the Wellbutrin and it made me more crazy instead of helping. I chewed gum like a fiend. I also thought about using the patches but I was like you and decided that this was just going to prolong the addiciton. I still find myself going outside to talk on the phone because that is when I would smoke. It gets better after the third day. I am proud of you and you can do it. Goanna is a great support for quitting smoking. She is a great motivator! Good luck and keep us posted.

Egads. I caved. Ya'll are making me want to give it another go, since I haven't fallen off the wagon too badly. All in all, I have barely smoked in the past 3 days. Thinking about the patches at this point, since I got the nicotine back in my system anyway. :( Halfway through Day 2 was rough. I just caved. Dang...it's hard. This was much easier when I was getting preggers. It's not like I haven't quit before, but carrying a child gives quitting a new twist I just DON'T have this time around. Sheweeee!!!
I HATE to post this, I feel like I'm crying Wolf...I was so close...dangit.

Kathy, just think of it like your band -- you have good and bad days. Just focus on the goal. Adjust habits, so you don't experience smoker's PBs.
Each day is new and comes with a clean slate.
Kat817
11-27-2006, 07:02 AM
Go talk to your Dr. get some meds, buy the patches, or gum...whatever it takes. That is how you ended up with the band. The smoking is bad for your health as well, so get whatever help you need to change that habit. It is not a sign of weakness...it is a sign of addiction, and nicotine is one helluva addiction to have.
I quit on April 1st, 1991. Yes I gained weight. No I was not banded yet!! Gum didn't do me a lot of good, but old fashioned lemon drops helped...something with the tartness. I had been smoking for 16 years when I quit. My best friend quit with me, she only made it a couple of days, and she still smokes to this day, but she is coughing a lot, and that scares me...
Think about it, you went 2 days with no cigarettes, you likely saved over $4.00, and improved your health in those 2 days. Every time you opt not to light up, it helps you. Each time you "quit" even if it only lasts a little bit that time, you have made progress.
You CAN do this. Take your kids pictures and slide them down inside the cellophane of your cigarette package....you may not be carrying them right now as in pregnancy, but you are influencing them, and affecting their health as well as your own. Even if you only smoke outside, it clings to your clothes, and they DO breathe in the chemicals....it has been proven. They will be better off too...
It is tough to quit...you are tougher!!!
We will be here, through success and failure.....full of support!

Ya'll just bring tears to my eyes. Thank you so much.
Kathy (Stitchy) I started laundry this morning after trying about 2 gross puffs. Laundry is better. Thanks!
I see all the little things that needs to be done in my home and they used to make me want to escape to the deck for a smoke (they still do, I suppose) but I see this morning, they can be my projects to replace the smoke break. Much more productive, right? I'm hanging on your every words, all of you. Thank you for being so kind and supportive. I think I'm ready. I'll keep trying. I need to do this. It's another Monkey off my back. The Ring, The Flouro fill, quit smoking, the Projects list on the Commitment thread...maybe now that will get done? Anyway...I won't give up altogether just yet.
Joyce, you are too funny...avoid the smoker's PB's! I get it...that analogy works!
Dang, I'm kind of excited and scared, I think I may just do this thing. I'll call my sister and tell her. She smokes, too, but has wanted to quit. She'll understand and support me, maybe even give it a shot with me. ??? If she and I quit, her BF will quit, too, and NONE of us will smoke. We'll be a smoke-free family. Wouldn't that be wonderful? (I think my sister's getting a ring for Christmas...hehe)

During the past year I would bring my friends that smoked to the "Bodies...The Exhibit" at the MOSI museum here in Tampa. The various lungs that we saw almost always worked to get them to stop smoking. Needless to say it was gross. The website is: http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/bodies.html

Debbie that's some nasty chit, isn't it? Ugh. I'm chewing gum, and when hubby gets home I'm headed to the Drug Store to find the right patch for me. Kathy - keep posting on this thread. I have it as one of my suscribed ones. This is a tough battle. It helps so much to have someone to talk to. But remember, just because you slip up, doesn't mean you aren't winning. When I was quitting, I used to occasionally bum smokes from my SIL. She smoked menthols. Yuk! I could only take about 1.5 drags and stubbed it out. I still considered it a success.
Did I tell you it was 30 years ago? In the beginning, I praised myself for how many days I was smoke-free. Sometimes it was hours. Then it started spreading out in time. Now I don't think about it except when something like this comes up.
Hang in there, girlfriend!

How do I type that eeeeeehhh sound when you get the wrong answer on the game show? :heh: I have had a few today. Considerably less than I would have, seeing as I'm still hacking lung parts when I cough.
Okay, BITCH ALERT: ARMED AND DANGEROUS
I went to Wal Mart and bought Nicotine Patches, a bag of butterscotches, a bag of Spearmint Starlights, a bag of lemonheads (they didn't have lemon drops? thanks for the tip, Kat) and a big row of gum, stocked up on bottled water, oh, and got a few other things like milk. I have 2 unopened packs that I hid from myself, so they don't count, and I have less than 1/2 pack left of the open pack. I don't know if I'll prolong my misery and smoke a few more, or if I'll just wake up in the morning and throw on a patch. I'll sleep on it. Wish me luck. My throat hurts. I'm certian smoking while sick is the culprit. I need to ride this wave while it's breakin', right?

Go Kathy...you can do it!
I quit about 6 yrs ago...I went from 3 packs of Lucky Strikes a day...to NONE.
I was visiting my best friend's dad in the hospital, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer (from smoking) and it had traveled, he was experiencing some odd mental issues from brain lesions and occasionally would not know who he was speaking with or what year it was. One night was particularly bad, he thought it was the 60s, he was chatting away about Kennedy and Nixon and Vietnam and how happy he was my friend and I weren't going to Vietnam...he thought we were two of his friends from the 60s. My friend was crushed, he couldn't bear seeing his dad like this and neither could I. We said our goodbyes and we were about to leave. I did the same thing I had done a billion times before...I stuck a cigarette in my mouth and got my lighter out. I had 6 floors to ride in an elevator, but I was going to be ready to light up the moment I opened the outside doors.
Suddenly his dad has a moment of clarity, he turns and says, "what are you an asshole?" I spun around stunned...he never cursed, and definitely never at us. He's looking right at me and says, "oh its so sad that I have cancer, that i'm dying...from SMOKING, so sad that you can't get that cancer stick in your face fast enough. Well have fun killing yourself, but don't come back and see me if you're smoking still.".
I quit that moment, I never lit that cigarette and I buried him two weeks later with my last 2 packs of cigarettes, I vowed that day if I ever want to smoke again, I would have to go get those cigarettes to do it.
I made it through without any drugs or patches or any gum or candy and I didn't gain any weight...my secret? Cocktail straws. I stole a box of them from work and chewed on them constantly. You are more addicted to the actions and patterns of smoking then you are to the actual cigarette.
You can do it Kathy, you just need to right inspiration and the right motivation. Best of luck!

Wow 503, your story gave me goose bumps.

I can do this. I WANT to do this. I'm nursing the last of the pack...I have cleaned the deck and thrown away all but 1 of the ashtrays out there (it's my sister's and it's ancient or it would be gone, too) and I'm mindful...all day...of quitting. I suppose tomorrow morning I'll be donning the patch. I'm excited, scared, relieved, nervous, mad, and exhausted of it. Somebody play TAPS for Kathy-the-Smoker-for-20-years. A new one is being re-born, and Labor is gonna be long and hard. I don't care. I gotta do this.

Just find something else to do when you would be smoking. For example...I had two teenage boys as neighbors when I quit, whenever I needed a cigarette I would go smack the hell out of those two. It served two purposes:
1. I no longer needed an function that smoking was filling.
2. They got the beatings they so justly deserved for all the crap I endured while being their neighbors. Like 8am m-80 tests before the 4th of july.
If you got some kids...give em a beating, i'm sure they've done something wrong you don't know about yet.
Kathy

If you got some kids...give em a beating, i'm sure they've done something wrong you don't know about yet.
hehe, I've got a 3yo sneaking bandaids from the rack in the closet, telling me to sshhhhh! and I just know he's putting them in his backpack. Spiderman bandaids go in Spiderman backpacks, I guess...but since he's telling me to sssshhhhh he must think it's wrong? Crazy kid. Mine are too young to get the fullfilling *WHACK* I'll need. I'll just have to run the stairs or something.
Should I put a patch on this afternoon? Even if I take it off at bedtime?
Okay, Kathy, the hidden packs will dissappear, promise. The ashtray doesn't call me...it's clean, the whole deck is clean...it's the escape to the outside that calls me. If anything, I have made it more inviting now! It will be dificult to resist the impulse to see the door and grab one. I can put the ashtray away, but the great glass door still stands. I'm gonna have to get over it. :(
Now, life's next distraction, picking up my daughter form school. Gotta run...

Hi Kathy, I quit for 2 years when I found I was pregnant the last time, and recently have been sneaking them if I have a beer (which I haven't had in 3 weeks). Its such a disqusting habit, but I could use one now and I am not drinking a beer - not sure that helps, except I know how you feel. I keep from doing it because I make myself think about my children growing up without me.........jab to the heart I know, but it works. I wonder if I am gone tomorrow, will my 2 year old remember me, twist the knife in my heart..........Anyway you can do this. hang in there, and if you slip up, don't beat yourself up, you are battling a chemical addition, it will be hard, but stand strong!!! Good thought Kat...hmmmm...I'll have to think about that. The compulsion to hit the door is several times a MINUTE! when I'm in the kitchen. But here we are pushing 4 hours so the hard part is just beginning. :( I'll make it, just let me whine about it :)

Hi Kathy,
Well done on getting rid of your last smokes. Next you MUST get rid of that ashtray - either give it back to your sister, or throw it in the bin. If anyone comes over and wants to smoke, get them to use an old drink can or glass bottle, then just chuck it out. We found that having ashtrays around was more likely to encourage people to smoke at our place, leading us to want to bot "social ciggies" off them.
You are already doing this - after just 12 hours of non-smoking, your body is already starting to heal, and after just a few days, is almost back to normal. They say 21 days to make a new habit, so why not make that your target? I reckon that's when you can officially call yourself a non-smoker. It worked for Idahobeauty. I am so proud of her and you for doing this!!!
A trick my dad had (he's SUPER anti-smoking) when my younger brother used to smoke was to keep a jar with butts and water in it out in his garage. Every now and then when he got fired up at my brother for smoking, he used to show him saying: "See this black mess, that's what your lungs look like inside, here smell it and see what it's doing to you, how rotten it is". He called it his jar of death. It was so gross, eventually it worked and my brother quit.
I posted some stuff for Idahobeauty a while back to help her out - I'll go find a bunch of it and re-post it here for you. The Aussie anti-smoking lobby is really strong, lead by the Quit Campaign. We have gross pictures of smoking impacted body parts and huge warnings printed all over our smoke packs, shops are not allowed to show the packs (other than the printed health warnings on the front), absolutely no advertising of ciggies anywhere. Plenty of advertising for patches and Quit info. The one I like at the moment has the slogan "Lose the smoke, keep the firre" - basically saying you'll have a much more adventurous & enjoyable life without the fag hanging out of your mouth.
I'll find you some weblinks to some of our Aussie Quit info. Be back soon! **heads off on a mission**

Found this interesting, it doesn't take long to make a difference.
Beneficial Health Changes When you Stop Smoking
Stop smoking and the body will begin to repair the damage done almost immediately, kick-starting a series of beneficial health changes that continue for years.
20 minutes - Blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal.
8 hours - Nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in blood reduce by half, oxygen levels return to normal.
24 hours - Carbon monoxide will be eliminated from the body. Lungs start to clear out mucus and other smoking debris.
48 hours - There is no nicotine left in the body. Ability to taste and smell is greatly improved.
72 hours - Breathing becomes easier. Bronchial tubes begin to relax and energy levels increase.
2 - 12 weeks - Circulation improves.
3 - 9 months - Coughs, wheezing and breathing problems improve as lung function is increased by up to 10%.
1 year - Risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
10 years - Risk of lung cancer falls to half that of a smoker.
15 years - Risk of heart attack falls to the same as someone who has never smoked.
Weight Gain
The possibility of weight gain is often of particular concern to those who want to give up smoking. More than 80% of smokers will gain weight once they quit smoking but the long-term weight gain is on average only 6-8lbs for each smoker who quits. However, this is the weight gain made without recourse to any special attempts at dieting or exercise and it presents a minor health risk when compared to the risk of continued smoking. In addition, improved lung function and some of the other health benefits of giving up smoking are likely to make exercise both easier and more beneficial.
Smoking Cessation Aids
There are two proven pharmaceutical aids to stopping smoking: nicotine replacement therapy and bupropion, known by its tradename, Zyban. Nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), such as chewing gum, skin patch, tablet, nasal spray or inhaler, are designed to help the smoker to break the habit while providing a reduced dose of nicotine to overcome withdrawal symptoms such as craving and mood changes. Studies have shown that NRT roughly doubles the chances of a smoker successfully quitting compared to someone using no therapy.
Bupropion, (Zyban) works by de-sensitizing the brain’s nicotine receptors and has similar success rates to NRT. The course of treatment lasts around 8 weeks. It is only available on prescription under medical supervision. Zyban is safe for most healthy adults but there are side effects, the most serious of which is the risk of seizures (fits). This risk is estimated to be less than 1 in 1000 but other less serious side effects such as insomnia, dry mouth and headaches are more common.
Other Cessation Aids
Acupuncture and hypnosis. A review of alternative stop smoking aids found little evidence to support the effectiveness of either acupuncture or hypnosis as a means of stopping smoking but such methods may suit some smokers.
Clinics and self-help groups. Smokers who are motivated to quit the habit may benefit from cessation clinics or self-help groups, although smokers should be cautious about claims of high success rates made by some private clinics. A review of smoking cessation products and services found that smokers are up to four times more likely to stop smoking by attending specialist smokers’ clinics than by using willpower alone
New stop smoking medications. New medications are being developed to help people stop smoking. These include verenicline, a drug that stops nicotine reaching the nicotinic receptors in the brain, thereby removing the satisfaction that smokers get from smoking. Other drugs having a similar effect include rimonabant and a nicotine vaccine.
Hope this helps spell things out for you....I was surprised at how quickly the body could recover. Stay away from those smokes!!

Thanks ya'll. I have been reading all of the links and info. I'm keeping very occupied :) It's not too bad, really. Once I got past the impulses of hectic family dinner time...I'm okay. I got my coffee, though :ranger:
Nicotine coming out of the system sounds like a good thing until you consider that you also go into withdrawal, yes? I'm putting a patch on in the morning. I can't pull any punches. If I hate the way it makes me feel, I'll take it off and stop using it.

OK. Gross lungs on the door don't do it for you.
So, do something postive on that clean deck. Someone suggested knitting or crocheting. Now, I can relate to this. I am *Stitchy* after all. Yarn crafts are one of the things that I do, and they will keep your hands busy. If you already know how to knit, you know what to do. If not, learn. Many craft shops give lessons. And there are dozens of simple things to knit. They don't all have to be fancy sweaters. I have made scaves, hats, fingerless mittens. Afghans, both adult and baby sizes. None of these things require assembly. Just make them until they look big enough. Then learn to make kids sweaters. They make up quick and your kids will wear them regardless of whether or not they are perfect.
Hang in there Sweetie. You can do this. And when it is over, it will rank right up there with the band as one of the best things you have ever done for yourself and your family. Especially your kids. They are watching what you do. They want to do what Mommy does. Show them. (You can teach them to knit/crochet along with you.) I quit when my daugher was 2 years old. She has never smoked.

Here is something else you can do. Counted cross stitch. A couple of my pictures. One pretty simple. One not so simple. Never had a lesson. Just learned by reading books and online. Really hard to do this and smoke at the same time. Takes both hands. This is also something that you can do with your kids. There are very simple patterns out there.

Here is a great link that takes you through all the withdrawal and has great info on the nicotine patch: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#withdraw al
As vanity can be a great motivator, take this into consideration:
Visible and Immediate Rewards of Quitting
Quitting helps stop the damaging effects of tobacco on your appearance including:
1. Premature wrinkling of the skin
2. Bad breath
3. Stained teeth
4. Gum disease
5. Bad smelling clothes and hair
6. Yellow fingernails

Hey girlfriend, how about giving those soon-to-be whiter-than-white nails a lovely manicure to let your hands know that they're not going to be stinky and yellow any more now you are a non-smoker?? Definitely going to keep your hands busy for a while, you can't smoke around the flammable nail varnish (LOL!), and they'll look and smell great at the end!
When you have done that, and your knitting, crochet, cross stitch and yarn crafts, it will be time to catch up on the scrapbooking, make a quilt, hit the gym like Telly, hit the pavement like Jachut, hit someone like Just Paul (oops, only kidding - sorry Paul! LOL!!). You get the idea - no shortage of things to do now your hands aren't otherwise busy!

Yay! Thanks for sticking with me gang. I had already caved and given up. Your posts of encouragement gave me new life to stay the course. No more caving. I'm doing this!!!!
I had 2 rough spots last night. One at dinner and one after the kids went to bed. I kept doing that knee-jerk, physical, compulsive "go smoke" thing. I made it through, though. It wasn't terrible. After hubby went to bed, I watched some TV and caught up on some recorded shows (Medium, Ghost Whisperer-Penni's episode again, Ugly Betty, Greys, and a Primetime Special). I had nothing left to watch at 2am and was wide awake. So I made myself go to bed, but was wandering through the house, catching shadows out of the corner of my eye...a bit paranoid. I guess it's the Nicotine withdrawal? Anyway, I put a patch on this morning. I don't feel anything...but I guess it's helping? I'm doing okay. I quit smoking. Wow.
Okay, I'm getting another Monkey off my back and going to see my friend Susan. I have been trying to get together with her for weeks and today is the day. I'll be gone all morning, and I have plenty to keep me busy this afternoon, to be sure.
Kathy, those cross-stitches are amazing! I'm more likely to cross-stitch than knit...so when my pace changes (right now it's too frenetic for anything but the 'puter) I'll pick up a small one. Great idea.
I adore all of you...you have no idea!!! This thread has been a life-line. Truely.

If you do decide to try to knit or crochet, you don't have to do a big project, you can do squares then donate them to be made into blankets. Here where I live, our coordinator for the "Linus Project" can be reached through the American Red Cross. The squares are then joined together to form a blanket, by another volunteer, and the completed blankets are distributed to homeless people, people burned out in fires, even children in the hospital. They accept squares in 7 or 9 inch, and will also take full fleece blankets if someone prefers to donate them. Squares would be easy. My neighbor does this all the time. She keeps a ball or skein of yarn in an old coffee can with a hole punched in the lid, with the yarn pulled through...and she keeps it on her porch!!! Had to laugh, that is what I was thinking about when I told you not to give up the porch... just those things we aren't talking about!! Anyway, she has a plastic square cut out so she can check if she has reached size, and she sits out there, "observing" the neighborhood, and crochets squares!!!
I watch for sales on yarn, and buy it throughout the year, and for Christmas, I give her a trash bag full of yarn! I have bought yarn at yard sales for her---she doesn't care! The first year I just gave her new yarn and I gave her about 20 skeins, and she cried. So as she talked I realized she truly doesn't care she just wants it, so she can make squares!!! No, she also makes slippers, and caps for all the kids in the area.
Ok enough of a hi-jack----
Good plan to go and spend time with a friend!

You are going through nicotine withdrawal and the patch may help. You will wander around and feel restless. This is to be expected and this is also when you need to do something with your hands. Visit your local craft store and check out their projects. Christmas is coming and you can buy ornament kits. Christmas soaps. Handmade Christmas cards (rubber stamping?) I think someone mentioned scrapbooking. Make wonderful albums of your children. Start right now.
My DH said when he quit, he would always smoke in the car. So, the routine was to punch the lighter, hit his shirt pocket for the cigs, unplug the lighter. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Habits are hard to break. That's why you need to find something else new to do.
Keep the faith!

Laws Ban Smoking Around Children
By Emily Bazar USA Today
November 29, 2006
Anti-tobacco forces are opening a new front in the war against smoking by banning it in private places such as homes and cars when children are present. Arkansas and Louisiana this year passed laws prohibiting smoking in cars carrying young children. Vermont, Washington and other states and counties are forbidding foster parents from smoking around children in their homes and cars. Courts are ordering smoke-free environments in custody and visitation disputes.
"We are very rapidly moving to protect children from secondhand smoke, even from their own parents and grandparents," said John Banzhaf, executive director of Action on Smoking and Health. Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona said in June that children exposed to secondhand smoke suffer an increased risk of respiratory ailments and sudden infant death syndrome.
Smokers' rights groups liken banning smoking in private to the "Salem witch hunt," said Gary Nolan, spokesman for The Smoker's Club. "If we don't reverse this, they'll be telling us what we can eat and what we can feed our children," Nolan said.
Former smoker Bob Mathis, a Democratic state representative in Arkansas, sponsored a law that prohibits smoking in a car carrying a child young enough to require a car seat. It took effect in July. "We have laws on the books in every state of the union against child abuse," he said. "This is a form of child abuse."
At least six states and some counties prohibit foster parents from smoking when foster children are present, said Kathleen Dachille, director of the Legal Resource Center for Tobacco Regulation, Litigation & Advocacy at the University of Maryland School of Law. "There are times when it's appropriate to regulate what people can do in their home," she said. "The state is responsible for that child."
Calif. Lawmakers OK Ban on Smoking in Car with Kids
August 31, 2006
The California Senate has approved a measure that would impose $100 fines for smoking while driving with children young enough to have to ride in child-safety seats, the Associated Press reported Aug. 28.
"We all know that secondhand smoke is hazardous," said state Sen. Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento). "Children are effectively smoking a pack and a half a day for every hour they are exposed to smoke in a car."
The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Paul Koretz (D-West Hollywood), was returned to the Assembly for a revote; it was approved in a different form last year.
Currently, California law requires car seats for children under age 6 or weighing under 60 pounds. But new legislation could require children as old as 8 to be in car seats, broadening the impact of the new tobacco bill.
Australia Mulls Car Smoking Ban
By Phil Mercer
BBC News, Sydney
Authorities in Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, are to consider banning smoking in cars. A parliamentary inquiry will look at the effects of passive smoking on passengers, particularly children.
Supporters of the proposal have admitted, however, that enforcing such a ban would be difficult. Smokers in Australia have already been squeezed out of bars and restaurants, as well as some beaches and most other public places.
Now Fred Nile from the Christian Democratic Party has drawn up a private member's bill that makes cars the next target. His idea will be investigated by a parliamentary committee. The plan appears to have the support of the state government.
A spokesman said that tough action should be implemented to stop the small number of irresponsible people who smoked around youngsters in their cars. There is, of course, the tricky issue of enforcement.
Ministers have conceded that applying any ban would be difficult. Similar laws have been proposed in parts of the United States and Germany, but were rejected on privacy grounds.
The New South Wales government said there would have to be far more public debate before any new measures were brought in. This type of smoking ban has been rejected by the state parliament on two previous occasions.
Supporters of the legislation have argued that research into the dangers of passive smoking has proved that change is urgently needed.

11-30-2006, 11:35 AM
I'm doing it! I'm super duper sleepy. I slept in my first patch last night and did fine. The directions said to take it off at bedtime if you experience sleep disturbances, etc. but it was fine. I took it off this morning, then waited a few hours before I put a new one on (after my shower). It's nice to know you were this sleepy, too, Idaho.
The whole quit-smoking mindset is much easier this time. I recognize the thoughts and feelings so they are easy to embrace.
Things I like so far:
1) I didn't have to take a shower at the last second before going to church last night, so I wouldn't reek after a day of smoking. I just put my shoes on and went. :)
2) I can't wait to clean my car better and have it smelling nice. I avoided smoking with kiddos in the car (mostly...but I would sneak...bad Mom, I know) but the smell is in there, and the kids were exposed to it. Now they aren't.
3) I was much more attentive helping Rachel with her homework yesterday. I wasn't trying to take a smoke break while she was working.
4) This morning my hubby told me he was proud of me. I decided, and I did it. This is how he thinks of things...like projects to be completed, and he could never understand how I couldn't just decide and lose weight. ??? But I quit "his way" and he likes that. He knows it's different from quitting due to pregnancy. He's glad.
Things I don't like: the occasional coughing fits. Ugh. And the sleepiness.

Almost 48 hours!!! When my mom quit smoking she was super tired too and feel asleep at her desk. :) This is a great thing for your kids too! The reason my mom decided to quite smoking is because I came home from school (I was 7 or 8) one day in tears because they told us that people who smoked died and I thought she was going to die too. It's a big motivator to be around longer for your kids!

Hi Kathy, hope u dont mind me chiming in here, I am new to the board and not yet banded (12/5/06) but I did quit smoking for the second time 24 days ago, I smoked for 10 years and then quit for 8 years after my second child was born. Then started after my oldest became a teenager and now had to give it up again. It is horrible but its the best thing you can do for yourself. I read somewhere are kids have a 75% higher chance of becoming smokers if we smoke. Anyway just wanted to offer my support. Oh, and the patch thing, I use them as prevention now like when I'm gonna be with someone I know is gonna smoke or at the bar with hubby (like that happens very much with 3 kids) or something stressful happens, but, I only use 1/2 of one because the whole one will make me sick and give me a headace (I have really only used them 3 times I think) Best of luck to you and try the patch thing it works for me.

Thanks for the support Juliebird! I'm honored to have your first post! Hey, great idea about using the patches that way. I have this all or nothing mentality. I'm coping, but not staying very busy. Is it the patch doing that? I'm going to read the booklet again...I was sooooo sleepy driving today at 1pm, then when I got home, I couldn't nap. ???

That's Day 4...what day is this? Day 2 + almost 9 hours. Ugh. If I can just make it through tomorrow maybe my lungs will loosen and I'll get my energy back? I FEEL the bronchial tubes and my throat restricting. It feels awful. I'm not tempted to smoke, in fact, Stitchy, that physical impulse to move toward the great glass door has subsided in a BIG way. I'm cool, the deck doesn't scare me, I'm not tempted to smoke. My habits are even controllable, and I think it's the Patch that's helping. What's HARD is the physical withdrawal symptoms. Why is this not familiar? Ugh. Aloe Vera juice and it's beddie-bye time for me.
Have I said THANK YOU enough to each of you?! Oh, I'm so grateful for this thread and for all of you.

Nighty night, Kathy. Hope you don't cough too much in the morning. That was my worst time, but it does get better.
I think Juliebird had a good idea. Try half a patch. Might help with your energy. Energy = busy hands.
Peace.

hitting the 'puter instead to avoid an urge.
What a great idea, whenever you feel the urge pound out a post here. Do you realize that in five days you have been the focus of 10 pages of posts. You have had 22 people pop in here and offer you support, to me that rocks, what a great on-line community we have here.
You know I was thinking, that smoking has affected all of us, never mind if we smoke. I wasn't just talking second hand smoke, that's a whole issue in itself. For me anyway, one of the biggest reasons that I don't smoke is the effect that people smoking throughout my life has had on me. I have felt resentment, fear, helplessness, anger, etc towards that little cigarette when it comes to people smoking in my life. I have played the "why won't you quit for me card" with no success with my parents my whole life (both chain smokers) and still to this day they are smoke-stacks. Not trying to get too deep here, just showing that physiologically smoking can affect non-smokers also.
Great avatar, I feel honored to have coined the phrase. Anytime over the next few days, weeks, months that anyone gets on your nerves and calls you a bitch, you now have the perfect response "but I am a healthy bitch!"
We are all so proud of you!!!!!!

Yes! And I do come and pound a post...or two...I'm blown away by the support and encouragement. It's nice just to have a place to vent! You people ROCK. I had given up. You brought me back. Thank you. I'm so glad I finally quit. Feels so GOOD!!!!!!!!!
Good things:
my hubby told my Dad I quit and he was SHOCKED and happy and proud!
I'm maintaining 175.0 for 3 days now. When I get back to Curves...which I actually see in the near future now, maybe I'll kick start the loss to Wedding Weight...168 here I come!
I started smoking again when I hit 240+ about a year after both kids were born. I smoked so I'd quit gaining! And I avoided quitting because I wasn't done losing! Thanks to my band, and the Patches, I think I can do both. I KNOW I can stay quit, I HOPE the eating urge doesn't kick my butt in the weeks to come.
So far the cough is better today. I ran the humidifier on High all night. I swear that helps.
I'm the coolest person I know today. I quit smoking.

I think Juliebird had a good idea. Try half a patch. Might help with your energy. Energy = busy hands.
I'm afraid to cut it in half this soon! It IS a great idea. I'm doing Step 1, for those who smoked a pack a day or better. I was NOT smoking less than 10, so I started on Step 1. I do it for 6 weeks, then move to Step 2, which is half the Nicotine of the Step 1 patches. 2 weeks of Step 2, then 2 weeks of Step 3. Done.
I'm hopeful I'm getting some energy back. I slept well last night and feel good this morning. Now I just need to take on the day. My to-do list is massive. I'd like to see some progress with my home cleaning/organizing projects. This place is a bit of a mess :( and it's a tad overwhelming. Here I go!

The hunger hits. All in all, I haven't gorged badly AT ALL, but the nibbles have hit. Nibble here, nibble there...and it's all so yummy. Big difference having the band, though. I just can't eat the volume I would have. This might be a good time to do the "eat something every 2 hours all day long" technique! I could do that...hmmmm.
Cough is getting better. I'll be lady-like again soon...not this hacking nasty phlegm-laden gravel-voiced grouch. I'm as delicate as a flower, and smell just as pretty :)

Sry it took me so long to repost. I was running errands trying to get x-mas done b-for my sx tuesday (I have 3 kids ages 14, 9, and 3) so I was out all day. Kept me busy though so I didnt want to eat eat eat. I did eat the topping off 1 piece of pizza (still no carbs). So in reference to the patch, I found a whole one made me sick to stomach and gave me a headache not the mention the lethargy (please excuse the spelling I went to arizona schools, lol) so I cut them in half and now (3+weeks) if I know im gonna be in a situation or I have an unexpected craving I just put one on (I always have a patch with me) it has worked every time. Another thing I do is sugar free lifesavers or suckers (suckers are the best) as well as frozen grapes and sunflower seeds. all of these wont sabatoge diet efforts. I also immediatly switched to iced coffee, I know it sounds wierd but when I changed the morning basics from hot black coffee and the news to iced sf black cherry latte and reading online for 1/2 hr I changed everything. Sometimes its that simple and dont worry it does get easier every day. Oh one more thing, u said u have a 3yo old, I often used the opportunity for a "break" from the kids so I didnt give that up I either lock myself in my room for 10min and write in a journal watch a show or shave my legs, whatever I need it just still gives me the moment I desperatly need. Sry for the long post just thought I could share my experience and it might help. GL2U
One more ?, how do I post a intro? im looking bot thought this might be faster.

Kim, that's funny. I don't "look " like a smoker, or seem like a smoker, and now I'm NOT a smoker! Quitting sucks, though. :(
Hey Juliebird, I didn't realize you had quit so recently, just 3+ weeks?! Good job!
Thanks for sharing your experience. You are dead on to me about "escaping" or getting a break from the kids. That's exactly what I did! I find myself "escaping" to the computer more now but what I really need to do is set a timer and lock myself in my bedroom. That's an excellent idea! I have a 2nd grader, too but she's at school until 3pm and takes up so much less room (figuratively) than a 3yo boy. LOL
Thanks for the ideas. Keep 'em coming! I'm glad to know the lethargy is Patch-related. I had more spring in my step today. But I was more hungry, too. I'm worried about the scale in the morning. :(

You know Kathy the interesting thing is this experience (I am told) is just like being banded, you had to surround yourself with all the right tools, prepare your mind and body and look to friends and family for support. So, try to apply whatever you used when you were banded to complensate for the inability to turn to food for whatever reason u did. You managed to win the weight battle and u can too win the smoking one. use the patch just as u did the band, a tool to help YOU be successful and I know u can do it. Be proactive, dont wait for a crisis and then figure out how to deal with it, have the candy or the suckers or the patch or whatever works for you ready so the transistion is mindless! Good luck let me know if I can help, I will try.

You HAVE helped! Thanks Julie. :)
I had a smoking dream last night. I was so relieved when I woke up this morning and I HADN'T had a cig. It was full of stress and emotion: a plane crash involving youth group kids from church (noone hurt in the dream), rejection, dissappointment, frustration, money stress...all the fears and stress-factors that would cause me to fire one up. Odd, huh?
Working on Day 4! Yay! Pretty soon, I'll be measuring in weeks and not posting every hour! LOL

Good luck with today Kathy, its only one more day!! for me when I made it to the 7 day mark I woke up and finally wasnt thinking about smoking (I am sure its cause someone told me after 7 days I would no longer be physically addicted) I wont say I dont think about it now, I do, there is just not any internal battle and the physical symptoms are gone. Good luck today again and find some to do, clean out a closet, organize some pics, do some scrapbooking or clean out the toys in the babies room (donate the ones he doesnt want and make room for the ones he'll get for x-mas) if your son is like my dd it could be an all day project!!

I slumped today and hit a depression. :( I remember this one, I feel like I lost my best friend, my coping mechanism. I feel lost. Ugh. I forgot how long it lasted, but the very first time I quit smoking, I remember getting depressed and soon after, hitting the Cozy Shack Rice Pudding. OMGosh, that stuff was soooo delicious. I ate a tub a day, sometimes more. Creamy, thick, vanilla yumminess. I couldn't help myself. Now I'm banded and can only do so much damage with food, and I know how to NOT do damage with food...I've just got to find my way. Hubby said something trashy to me about how he's got something I can...well, you know. Somehow, that's just not Cozy Shack OR a cig! Silly hubby. :)
Time to decorate the tree...

Keep up the good work Kathy!
I remember when I quit I had several vivid dreams that I killed people. I had one where I woke up and found blood covered clothes in the tub....then I woke up and had to go in the bathroom and check.
The weird part for me is that I have no urge to smoke anymore ever, but I do have smoking dreams. I had one a few weeks ago where I was just sitting in a really comfortable chair, and I was chain smoking. I wish I knew what it meant...perhaps that spending to much time slacking off and sitting on my butt will kill me as sure as those cigarettes will LOL.

Have you found something to substitute for the cigs? (besides rice pudding, lol). Whats your plan for today? Remember, the depression and self doubt is all part of the process, welcome it, its just a sign you are one step closer to winning. This to shall pass, just like the all the others have. Okay, I can't count by hours anymore unless I reeeeally think about it. So it's days now. 3:30pm will be 6 days. Cool. I still occasionally knee-jerk go smoke, that first second, as I rememeber what I forgot, then I remember that I quit. Sometimes it's dissappointing realizing I'm NOT going to get that ciggie, but I just find something else to do. Dishes, laundry, TV or 'puter. Whatever.
It just feels so good to be past the hardest part and on to changing my thinking and habit. I keep wondering if it will get harder than this at some point? I guess I need to be vigilent about getting that fresh new Patch on evey morning, just in case. I swear, those things help. I can't afford to take quitting for granted. To much to lose! But I'm so proud of me!
You guys being here has helped me sooooo much. It's amazing, and I can't be more grateful!!!

SO true!! When everyone else is making their New Years Resolution to quit ~whatever~ You'll be like 'I'm already doin' it' and it'll feel so good!!
Questions:
1. Are you around anyone inside or very close outside the house that smoke? If so, we need to talk about how to handle that and I'm sure there will be a ton of other suggestions.
2. Do you drink (alcohol anyway)? If so, are you more prone to smoking with a drink or two? This was my big weakness, esp. at a party where others will have them and be smokin' em. Maybe you need to keep yourself away from that situation, at least during this 21 day process, anyway. Hey, I never knew about the 21 day thing! I learn sooooo much here on this forum...even things not related to the BAND.
Kathy
12-04-2006, 08:42 PM
I'm way ahead of the game of those quitting Jan 1'st! Yeah baby!
Laura...
1. My sister and her hubby-to-be are the only 2 left that smoke. They both want to quit and are very supportive. My Dad quit 9 months ago, my hubby doesn't smoke, neither does my Mom and her hubby. That's basically everyone who comes over regularly. We'll have the "stepping out back" issue, but I'm really fine with not smoking. I haven't been on the deck except to call in the kids since I quit. Not true, I went out last weekend, but it was fine. I think I'll be okay. Really, the only hard part is that few seconds where I remember to go smoke, then remember that I quit. There are certain parts of the day where it happens every few minutes! Evenings, around dinner time, and before bed are the worst. It's getting better. I'll be experiencing the family dinner this weekend, so I'll let you know how it goes. It's not a question of "if I'll smoke", it's more a matter of "how hard it was" you know?
2. I do an occasional glass of wine, but being a stay-at-home Mom, I just don't have the lifestyle I used to have. I stay home! It's surprising to me what a home-body I am. So I'm not likely to be around large crowds of smokers. And if I do drink, it's a glass of wine at home. My issues are escaping the stresses of the day (kids...) by stepping out back. It's taking some adjusting.
Wow, great questions! It was really helpful to think about those things!

Well, be really careful this weekend when your sister and hubby-to-be are over. Maybe, pass out patches to them and encourage them to quit with you...the patches could make good X-mas gifts. If they don't go for that...just think of yourself as leading by example and eventually they will follow.

Have you tossed all the packs? You're not hoarding any "just in case" are you? If they are gone, you are not going to have the temptation and it will be easier. If you haven't, make a ceremony of it. Truly, truly it's important that they be gone.
Kathy
12-05-2006, 06:19 AM
Laura, me not saying a word and NOT smoking speaks way louder than all the words in the world! It was that way when Dad quit. It will trickle, they both want to quit, so they will when they are ready. It WILL be interesting having smokers here at the house. I think everyone is coming over Sat night.
Stitchy, the packs are long gone. I gave them to my BIL. They are just too expensive to trash, if he's going to be smoking and buying them anyway. I coudln't waste them LOL! There are NO smokes around. I gathered up the lighters and put them in a baggie in the junk drawer to give out this weekend, then I went to light a candle for Advent and had no fire! I rescued one of them. :)
Doing good over here! Still compelled, but getting by fine. It's really not too bad. Odd, huh? I must have been ready to give it up. I just think about how good it feels not to stink, how good it feels not to BE a smoker, it's worth it. :)

Let's see, in a few hours, it will be a full week.
Here's a "quit smoking NSV" or Non-smoking victory? LOL I needed a haircut, I needed a shower. I didn't have time to go home first and shower. I took the scrunchie out of my hair and it still smelled like shampoo from yesterday. WOW! I wasn't taking my shirt off at the Hair Cut place, so I decided to ignore my armpits that needed a wash, and went to the salon and got a haircut. Cool! Now I have a cute new 'do. Okay, it's the same ole 'do, just shorter, but it looks good. :)
I guess if I averaged a pack a day, I'd be at 7 packs today, that's almost a $19 savings. More than pays for the haircut. hehe. I'm still $5 ahead. My next big spending spree will be to take the van to Auto Bell. And soon. I want the inside windows washed! And then there's the splatter on the side where the car next to me at Wal Mart squashed a box with one of those big cookie ice cream sandwiches...SPLAT and SQUIRT all over my car. Oops. :)
I forgot to replace my Patch this morning! Interesting! I got home from my haircut (and meeting my Dad at the Optometrist to help him pick out new frames) and took that shower and remembered my Patch. I put on a new one, it's odd though, that I ran out the door like it wasn't an issue this morning. :)

What's this, Day 9? Yay!
I had to do the heavy slow deep breathing thing the other morning (yesterday?) when I almost blew my top. I just got so frustrated with no outlet! I stood in the kitchen and made myself breathe, leaned over the sink, talked me through it, calmed down, it worked! Wish I had the pretty path picture then, Diva! I'll save it for my next "moment"
Having a 3yo doesn't always help keep the stress level low.
I have allowed myself to indulge in more computer time than normal, just to avoid the deck while I'm at home. I don't usually just sit and surf. I'll check in throughout the day, post, read up, whatever, go do something, check back in. But since quitting, I'm ONLINE. ALOT. So I allowed myself to get dragged in on an ugly thread over on LBT. Such rudeness! I had to speak up, and I did, and I suffered the ridicule for it. Not that I regret it (I was right, you know!!!) and it was perfectly distracting, but what started as mindless became a bit more heartfelt, and stressful, especially when I'm trying to post something "important" and my 3yo is "distracting" me...LOL.
Ugh. Finding balance. Still haven't caved. :)

My superintendent in Key West has smoked for over 30 years, he quit smoking 4 weeks ago. He is using prescription lozenges - they look like cough drops. He swears by them. Says that they help with mood swings, lethargy, craving, etc. They are a stop smoking aid available only by prescription. I think that one of my previous posts about smoking aids may have mentioned them. Couldn't hurt, and it would occupy that mouth of yours (oh my, Paul and 503 are going to have a field day with that line...)
Great job, you are showing great inner strength. This should be an example to you just how strong and committed you can be to something that is worthwhile and important to you. As always...I am proud of my favorite "healthy bitch"

Oh Kathy,
You are so strong and able to meet this challenge. Just keep thinking about all that MONEY you can spend on new skinny clothes, going to get your nails done, make-up, new earrings . . . or perty perfume and other girly stuff. You are just going to love not smoking. You CAN do this.

Kathy, I had not been around and checked the thread in a few days---so I was just reading and catching up, and something struck me. You said your Sis and BIL want to quit, but haven't made the commitment yet. I was thinking, I bet when they do decide to quit, you will be their b2g!! As you are quitting you have all this support...which she does not belong to b2g, she would not have this. so by the time she makes the decision to quit, you will be comfortable being a non smoker, and can help guide her through the tough times. It will be a "Pay it forward" of the healthiest kind!!!

I bragged on ya'll tonight. I was talking with my Dad, who quit 10 months ago, and told him how ya'll puuuuulled me back in when I tried to walk away...I really couldn't have done this without you all! Thank you!!! I should change my name from healthy bitch to SuperKathy now. But I'm still bitchy :( It comes in waves, evenings, when "Daddy" comes home and the kids are hungry and whiney and I'm cooking and the phone is ringing and hubby is no help at all...
UGH! You know what he did tonight?! Lemme bitch for a sec. I was cooking, my Dad, sister and BIL were here, all talking, the phone rang, I let it ring because I didn't want to answer it. If it was someone who really needed me they'd call my cell phone. I don't need anymore distractions, right?! Well, he grabs the phone, and yep, it was for me!!!!!!!! UGH! Then he hands it to me. So, it was my Mom...but I could have called her back in 10 min, right?! Okay, kind of a dumb thing to groan about but it really dug under my skin!!!! Don't do that to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I'm thinking I need to get past some imaginary stage still, where I don't get so gripey and stressed out so easily. I'll have to leave the "bitch" part for a bit, LOL!
I'm doing it! Day 10 is behind me now.
Oh, and Sis and BIL stepped out back a few times. Shewww! Stinky smokey when they came back in! It went fine not smoking with the smokers. :)

Congrats Kathy...day 10!! I think you are truely a non-smoker now.
My DH does that to me sometimes too. I tell him to say I'm not home so he says, "she says she's not home!!" Uggghhh!!!
Wow, I was worried about the smokers being around but you handled it great! I still think it DOES stink BUT something about a drink still to this day makes me want one. Lately, I just stay away from alchohol, too. Not good for the weight anyway...

Kathy, I am so proud of you. One of the most difficult things a new non-smoker goes through is to be around smokers. The patch must be doing wonders. I didn't have that luxury and it was soooo hard.

Stitchy, I think I'm underestimating the Patches. I have considered finishing this box and not getting another, but I think I'll stay on them. I may go to the lower dose for the next box, but I'm going to wear these suckers for at least 4 weeks!
Now, I ned to go to the Photo Gallery so i can see your pic. It's a Red X right now...BRB! Ahhh! No smoking is RIGHT!!! :)

Kewl. I bought the Wal Mart brand last time. 2 week supply for about $25, give or take a few bucks. I don't remember how much more the Brand was...I'll shop. Thanks for the heads up on Walgreens, Idaho! I have 2 more patches, so it's time for the next box. I will go ahead and get the lower dose-Stage 2. I'm starting to get adhesive build-up on both my arms. The material from my shirts sticks to the edges so I have lines of burgandy and brown and such all over my upper arms! LOL. I tried a Patch on my side but it got sweaty and uncomfortable. Can you put those things on your butt? Okay, hip? I suppose...it said hairless spots and I'm fairly certain my butt is hairless. ???
Anyhow, tomorrow afternoon makes 2 weeks! WOW!

Yes, that aggravating cough is gone, but then I'm not sick anymore so that's good. I can smell and taste, which isn't always a good thing  so now I can smell the yucky things, too. I'm not sure about the whole energy thing, it comes and goes. Some of what I'm feeling may be related to the Patches, but I dunno. I'm not a ray of sunshine just yet, but I do feel good. Mostly because I'm glad it's over and I don't smoke anymore. I could go for a cig, I'd like to smoke, but I'm glad I don't, so, I just don't. So there. :)

Hi Kathy, I was thinking of you this morning, i'm hoping this comes across better then it sounds.
I stopped this morning to grab some bottles of water before work and I was stuck behind this stunningly sexy woman with the most wonderful legs i've seen in a long time. The only problem, she stank of cigarette smoke, and even had some vicious yellow stains on her left hand pointer and middle finger from her cigarettes. I guess she noticed I was looking at her hand (I guess she figured I was checking for a ring) and she smiled at me...with gross stained teeth.
I suddenly thought, man o man...Kathy is somewhere right now being ogled by some freak like me, but there is nothing to keep him from flirting and asking her out and convincing her to leave her husband....
SO BE CAREFUL! All these men out there are going to be chasing you, and you should be saving yourself for me...LOL.
Meantime...Congratulations...2 weeks down and you are still cruising along like a champ.
Kathy, congratulations on 2 weeks not smoking! You are fabulous!!!!

Hooray Kathy!!! I think that you should stash away the money at Aussie rates for fags (about $10 per pack). At a pack a day for the past 2 weeks, you'd have $140 stashed away by now!!! Go on, you deserve it!!!

teehee, thanks 503. You made my day!
OMGosh, Goanna, $10 a pack?!!!!! That's US $10?! Who could afford it?! When I first started smoking, they were .90 a pack. I had a buck, I got a dime back. Virginia Slims Menthol Lights. Over the years I settled on Marlboro Ultra Lights (NON-menthol! can't believe I used to smoke menthols!) and I paid $27.50 a carton. That's 2.75 a pack. Yup, still saving loads of money by quitting!
Week 2 is behind me. I didn't put on a patch yesterday and had ALL kinds of nervous energy, but it felt so good to actually get something done! The Patch does have some wierd calming effect, which is good, but 2 weeks of Zombie in front of the computer and tired all the time was getting old.
I think I'll grab some gum for those times when the nervous energy makes me nibble on food. Nibble nibble nibble. Does anyone really realize just how yummy stick pretzels in Pimento Chees is?! Yuuuummmmmm. LOL
No more Patches, getting gum today. :) I was 177.4 on the scale. FOR SURE up from where I was before quitting. 177 is getting out of my comfort zone...I can't gain anymore than this, I just can't. BUT, I won't start smoking to avoid the weight gain. Too much progress to be lost by firing up, and I don't wanna be gross like 503's sexy leg lady who Stank. Ewwww.

So, you gain a little weight. Let the nicotine thing calm down and if you don't lose what you gained, GO GET A FILL! Let the band do some of the work for you.
That's what I told my doc when she put me on prednisone and told me I would probably gain weight. I just said "No, I won't." I just grinned at her. She didn't know about the band until she palpitated my stomach and found the port.

Teehee, you just keep popping those cute surprises here for me, Kathy! Very funny!
I put a Patch on this morning. The gum helps, but not like the Patch. Crazy crazy day with car trouble and eveything! But the good news is, I'm having lunch with Dianne (sunsett, lovemylapband) in just a little while! Fun!
If I can make it through today and the rest of the weekend without a ciggie, I am just dadgum Wonder Woman! Someone holler at Tricia! The last time she was here I grumbled at her! I need some Wonder Woman Vibe...big time! :D
Today:
All 4 of us out the door with lunches packed at 7:30am
Drop off daughter at school
Go pick up van from the shop-heater hose busted
Van battery is dead-something is up with the dumb ole radio hubby put in a few months back. It's draining the electrical system somehow, already changed the worn out alternator last month. Car is running now, but it's on borrowed time. Hubby is going to call his brother and find out what's surging or draining or whatever. Ugh!
Son to school 1/2 hour late
Hubby and I are 15 min. late for appt at the bank to get Equity Line switched to 2nd Mortgage...debt debt debt! with the new business. Scary! The company makes this payment but it's OUR house on the line!!!
Lunch with Dianne
Pick up son at 1, home for nap
Pick up daughter at 3, home for homework
Gymnastics at 4:30
Pick her up at 5:30, change in car, take her to dress rehearsal at 6pm for school Holiday Musical at 7pm.
Home and crash
Dinner for 10 tomorrow night
Gymnastics Jingle Bell Spectacular at 1pm Sat
Lunch with Charlotte Bandsters at 2:30 Sat
Hubby's Family Christmas Party at 6pm Sat night.
Hubby has to work Sat. :(
Can I do all this without a ciggie? YES! Will I go nuts between now and then? Probably! Extra prayers needed please! :) I'll be okay if my car doesn't die.
Dear Lord, please, by some miracle, keep my van running till hubby can get a chance to fix it! :amen:

Ooooo, Saucy!!!! :heh:
I'm less impulsively impatient. It does creep up on me though, and if I find myself getting a bit too snappy with one of the kids, I know I need to step back. I tried to back off the Patches but I knew yesterday was going to be a bear, and I slapped one on first thing. I nibbled ALOT less, but I was busy, AND out of pimento cheese
The cough is way better. It took the bronchitis/chest congestion a good week, but it's been fine since. Now, we are all dealing with sinus/allergy type stuff. I feel it in the air and keep the humidifiers running at night. It helps.
Ali, yesterday was definitely worth more than most! But I made it! I layed in bed last night and said, "it really was a good day, you know?" as hectic as it was. And I carved out special-ness for Rachel. She had her little singing Holiday Music night at school and I took her to Pizza Hut after. They have a Book It program where if she reads a certain amount of time each month she gets a coupon for a personal pan pizza. We "spent" her coupon. The Pizza Hut lady did a GREAT job! She really took time out to help Rachel pick her dots and key chain thingy, and congratulated her on her great reading, just made it special. Very nice.
Okay, the van needs a quart or two of oil and I think it's back on track. However, I have NO radio. No cassette player, no CD player, no FM or even AM. Just stereo kids in the back
Life is GOOD! :)

THAT'S the one I want! My 3yo is finally getting old enough I feel like I can farm him out for a favor, like exchanging kid-watching with the neighbors. He used to be so little, it wasn't a very even trade, ya know? Trade-out-babysitting is soooo much more affordable than paying a sitter. We could actually afford to go out to eat without the guilt! I need to "suggest" this. :)
Yup, you good folks just reeled me back in with your encouragement. I really would NOT have been able to do this without this thread and all of your help! I KNOW this! Thank you!!
I've got NOT smoking licked pretty good so far. I go for hours and almost all day, I guess, without thinking about it.
I haven't been able to lick the anxiety, though. It pops up. My fuse gets short, I'm ill, I know it, I can't stop the anxiousness. It comes out in being frustrated and in being edgy/panicky/wound-up/nervous. Like when my Mom was over, and she was doing my dishes. Great, huh? No, I REALLY needed to be doing those dishes. I said "it would help me alot if I could do those dishes" with a desperate look in my eye. She passed the dish wand. :)
Or hubby is driving and I start getting "what if" thoughts about car accidents and flipping over and blood and dead kids and terrible thoughts! I realize what I'm thinking and MAKE myself stop and take deep breaths. Yup, dealing with stress and anxiety in a new way is hard. This is the Prime Time to make another habit that is NOT eating. I'm aware of that.
Any ideas that I can use when driving, or stuck in a seat, or otherwise engaged? I'm good with my down time, I'm not good with my escape route. That used to be the deck, or a smoke in the car. Gloria said to suck on a straw, I need to try that. I'm open to suggestions!
When you are driving sing like you're up for a Grammy. Sing loud and clear and with great enthusiasm. And if your kids are in the car bring them into the fantasy. "OK everybody, here is a new show starring...Mommy!!!!!"
I don't have kids and I have a horrible voice but when I'm driving I am freaking Beyonce/Celine Dion/Shakira with an occasional Frank Sinatra/Led Zepplin thrown in for some spice.
That's all I got for now, but I must congratulate again Kathy! You are doing one fabulous job. You can do it!!!!!!!

Kathy I know I told you Saturday but I for one am very proud of you.
I watched my dad quite smoking when I my sister turned 14 (she is now 27) but he gained A LOT of weight. Now we having struggles helping him get the weight off. You are the one that makes me want him to get his weight off becuase you are doing so good and you just amaze me. Mom and I have him an appt to see our nutritionist at work the first of the year and we think he will listen to her better then us. (evil we know)
Stay strong...sing, hold that straw or pen or whatever it takes just hang in there.
Can't wait to see the next update from you!!!!

I did alot of driving today, and boy, did I sing! Not loud, no Mariah Carey stuff here! but I sang Christmas carols all the way home. It really did lower the stress! Plus, I don't have a radio in my car ('nuther story). Anyway, great advice! Thanks!
Today marks 3 weeks. :)
The weight is getting to be more of a struggle. I don't mind not losing, that's cool. But I was 179 this morning and it's getting creepy. So much for the weight I lost with my fill. I WAS down to 173! Geez. It's worth it, remind me that it's worth it!!!
I feel like I'm in the re-learning phase of things, like I'm really trying to do something different than smoke, not just NOT smoke. Deep breathing, singing, housework, all very helpful.
I may be in denial about nibbling. I have added drinking my water to my Daily Commitments (I used to be able to take that for granted) but I may need to take a week and log my food very carefully. I can't afford to eyeball it anymore, which drives me nuts. Whateva. I'll do what I gotta do. I'll attempt a smile while I do it :)

Kathy - When my Cathy quit smoking she said that driving was the worst for her. Bored while driving she said it gave her something to do with her hands. I put a satellite radio in her car, so she had 200+ channels to fidget with. Do you have a radio or a boom box that you can put in the car? That way you could at least have some tunes while you drive. I have a couple of extra radios here if you would like one (wish I had an extra van laying around here too). Let me know and I'll be happy to send you one.
You are doing great, Christmas is almost here - the food will taste even better!!!!

Here's the radio deal. I'm choosing to live without one. The one that came with the car broke. Someone gave us a CD player/radio (the old was cassette-it's a '94 Caravan with only 1 sliding door...yah, old! w/ 230K miles and I'm not kidding) and since then it's been an electrical nightmare. Something was "pulling" in the wires and draining the battery and my lights didn't work right at all. Hubby finally got the thing out and everything is working properly. I don't want him near the thing, to be honest. I'll sing to myself before I'll get stuck with a dead battery with 2 kids in the car. Too much worry/stress/struggle especially when he tells me for months it's NOT the radio each time I say it is. It was.
Bitter! Party of 1! Your table is now available!
Haha! Anyhow, as grateful as I am to you, Debbie, I promise I do NOT want another donated radio unless is comes with installation! LOL
Really, though, with the kids, I rarely turned the thing on anyway. I'm hardly EVER alone in the car for more than 5 miles so it's no biggie. A radio is just extra noise. Ya'll think my kids are rotton! They are wonderful, just kids. It's Mom that's a stressed out wreck! :) But I quit smoking. I'll get over it. Yay!
You are going through the hardest part now because it is a stressfull time--especially for mothers--getting ready for the holidays, family, in-laws, cleaning, runnning 5,000 errands.
When January comes and your time is a LITTLE more your own, you'll relax with DEEPER breaths, no sweets and munchy things around, and time to rest. A yoga class would be great--deep breaths. Also a massage. Have you turned in your Christmas list yet.
B vitamins are big. Also an epsom salts bath...just get it at the store. It gets nicotine out of your pores--you'll see the color in the bathtub.
This all helped me and others close to me. I'm pulling for you all the way.
My straw was the best, though.

OMGosh, is it yellow and brown that comes out of your skin with Epsom Salt baths? Ewwww! I'm in!
I have home Yoga tapes, I think, so I'll dig them out. Getting to a class just adds stress. I can easily find 15 min to lay on the floor and stretch and breath without all the fuss. I think it'd do me good. I'll add it to the list of things for today! And I'll pull a straw out of the drawer and give it a better shot. I also think I'll cut it to ciggie length, that may work better.
Here goes...working on week 4! It IS flying by, Heather! Wow!

:D
Too bad :( I don't pull off Ho very well.
This is supposed to be getting easier. I suppose it is on the "not smoking" level, but I have lost my crutch, and I'm having a hard time adjusting to replacing it. :( Ugh.

I am no expert at giving advice on quitting smoking, but find something to keep those hands busy... (besides eating of course)
I am SURE there is something that needs to be cleaned. That is what I do when I need to get my mind off something. I HATE doing it, but I get into the groove and have to clean everything and pretty soon I forget what I was trying to forget :)

I needed to hear that. I know you are right, I know this is what I need to do, so now, I'm going to log off and go do it. Clean, that is. Thanks, Heather!

I found one! It was in my top dresser drawer. I bought it years and years ago and never finished it. It's a pink Petunia. I'll work on it!
Thank God for homemade Vegetbale Beef Soup. I think it has saved my life. I eat at least 2 small bowls of it a day. I weigh 179.8 tonight, so I'm PRAYING I have topped out and I'll weigh a tad less in the morning, and be on my way to losing what I've gained. Cheers!

Whew! 177.4. I think the worst is over, but I'll continue being careful. I need to lose the rest of what I have gained. Square One is 173.4. Just 4 more pounds and I'm back where I started before I quit.

Ya'll just make me smile. :) Cool cheer, 503. Love it!
Yesterday was not so serene. I was in a haze of post-Christmas toy trauma. I just ate yesterday. All day. I couldn't stop. I had 2 large mugs of veggie soup, wheat thins and cheese ball (a bunch of it), 4 pieces of chocolate, 2 little slices of Totinos pizza, a bunch of Chex Mix, gosh, what else?, it was a huge graze-fest. I was outside myself. I did manage to get loads of cleaning done with 2 kiddos running around. I was ill when hubby got home so he just pretty well left me alone all evening. So, yeah, Bear, I'm crazy. LOL
Today is better. I feel a bit more normal, but I weigh 182. SIGH. It will come off quickly but I'm fighting the hard fight these days. Diet pills are my saving grace and I haven't pulled them out of hiding just yet. I will, though. You bet I will.
Be Serene. Good Mantra for today. :)

I started taking the Wellbutrin again today. I had tried it 6+ months ago but got hives after a week. I don't know why, but I quit taking it in case that's what gave me the hives. So, I'm giving it another go. I hope I do okay. I'm soooo anxious sometimes. Not as I walk around in a normal day, but I'm extremely reactive. I gotta get over this hump. I almost wonder if the Patches are dragging this out longer than it need to be. But I'm only 4 weeks+ quit, so I'm halfway through the Patch schedule, so. SIGH. I don't know. I'm giving the Wellbutrin a shot. I'll check back in a week. Not smoking is going very well. Adjusting is harder than I anticipated.

Kathy, keep us posted. You are over the physical part (for the most part) now its just like the weight, its a head game. I don't envy trying to loose and quit at the same time, but you are being so strong. In the infamous words of Rob Schneider - "You can do it!"

Kathy... I quit smoking, and thought that was the hardest thing I would ever do... wrong, losing weight is. I just believe that I have an addictive personality.. so I have to be addicted to something.... umm.. haven 't even gone for my psych eval yet.. won't they have fun with me. Good luck.... Yup, it's a word in MY vocabulary! I feel normal, but my sister looks at me like I'm nuts sometimes! Yesterday, I thought someone stole my son's GameBoy from the bathroom at a restaurant. I was out in the parking lot looking for the jerk who stole a kid's GameBoy! I was furious that someone would do that! UGH! I had laid it on the diaper changing table thing beside the sinks, and my friends little girl pulled it open and the GameBoy fell between the table. Once we found it I was fine, but my sister was worried about me all afternoon. I guess my fuse IS pretty short. It's aggravating, though. I don't need to be "losing" it. I'm having to become accustomed to a higher anxiety level and I'm getting weary of it. How long till this gets better?!!!!!
Thanks everyone. Unity, you'll get past that Psych Eval just fine. and I think you are in great company here! Thanks for the encouragement! :)

So far so good on the Wellbutrin. I have yet to get a Hive but it's only day 4 or 5? Here's hoping. I think it may help me.
I have been letting myself get slack on the Patches. I took a shower today at about 4:30 pm and took the Patch off in the shower. This evening, I swear I could get up from this chair and go smoke. The urge is FOR SURE there. Still!
I have 2 patches left, and I think I'll go ahead and get over my bad self and leave the Patches behind. I'm amazed at how my body needs the Nicotine. And I'm not even smoking! Forget this. I need to lose the Nicotine. I wouldn't do this but I'm banking on the Wellbutrin helping me stay...ummm...whatever it helps. *shrug* Less anxious?
I feel fat and dumpy and not good. I DON'T feel happy and energetic and slender. I feel like my belly is just huge. I have gained 3 inches in my waist since Thanksgiving. SIGH.
I'm so glad I don't smoke, but dang...I could light up without those patches, especially knowing lighting up could help me get this darn weight off. I'm frustrated.

You will have ups and downs for a long time, Kathy. This isn't an easy journey but believe me it's well worth the trip. Don't be so hard on yourself. Losing weight and losing the smoking are two very difficult things. How long are you supposed to stay on the patch program? Don't quit them too soon. You followed the weight loss program. Now it's time to follow the patch program.
I'm rooting for you!

I feel like a month later I'm going cold turkey. The Patches really really helped me, I can't say I regret using them. I may STILL use them, or a half patch, like...oh, who did that?...anyway, that nicotine addiction is hard core.
You are over the hump! Just make it through today!!! Woot!!!!!

Hey Kathy! Day 4 of no smoking here and I am hanging in there. I went back to the gym last night for the first time in weeks and I could actually breathe when my heart rate was above 130! Yay! Keep up the good fight!

Dang it. Today marks 1 week since I started the Wellbutrin and I feel the tingles coming on. On my forehead and cheeks, around my ribcage, my butt. No hives, just tingles. Why does it do that?! Maybe if I take a shower? SIGH. I think I may have to stop taking the Wellbutrin. :(
Anyone know what I could replace it with? Xanax? Valium?
Neal R.
01-05-2007, 12:35 PM
Sorry Kathy. Hope it doesn't turn to hives for ya.
DebbieChoos
01-05-2007, 12:41 PM
Tingles? Around the butt? Only you!
Are hives or "tingles" a common side effect? What dosage are you taking? If it is prescribed as Zyban it is marketed in 150mg little purple pills to be taken daily. If you are taking it as Wellbutrin it can be in 150 or 300mg creamy white to pale yellow pills and Wellbutrin can be taken more than once a day.
Maybe you are taking too high of a dose, check your prescription bottle and give us a report. Go....Now! Before "other" parts of your body start to "tingle".
Debbie

:pound: I crack myself up.
Tingles, yes, just under the skin, feels like you need to scratch but when you do, whamo, the Hives pop up in streaks where your fingernails scraped. That's what happened last time I took Wellbutrin. Who knows? I probably have myself paranoid. I don't have any yet.
I'm taking the 100mg tabs three times a day. She had given me the XR but the tab was big and not crushable. I have no problem taking the 100mg but if I needed to crush it, I could. *shrug* Who knows.
Nothing new is tingling, at least not till the kids go to bed, :heh: <see? that was funny! I crack myself up :pound:
DebbieChoos
01-05-2007, 06:14 PM
See I think that you are taking too high of a dose. When it is prescribed as Zyban, specifically for smoking you take one 150mg pill daily. You are taking 300mg daily as Wellbutrin. Same medicine, but prescribed for different things. Try taking 1 to 1 1/2 pills daily, reduce your dose by at least half. You should be far enough along on this non-smoking business that you probably don't need much anyway.
So take "Dr. Tingles" advise and try reducing your dosage. Please direct your co-pay to me asap.
Debbie
Kathy
01-05-2007, 08:31 PM
Thanks Dr. Tingles, I'll lower my dosage.:)
I added the Wellbutrin because I was so anxious and I don't want to lose the benefit I might be getting from the Wellbutrin. Since then, I also stopped the Patch, which was kind of like quitting again for about a day there! but much much easier.
I still have the Tingles but no Hives. I'll go to twice a day for a few days, then go to once a day from there. I wonder if the tingles are related to the Wellbutrin and why? It has something to do with nerve endings or recepters or something...neurological? who knows.
Your co-pay is in the mail! :D

So...smoke free Kathy....how's your tingly ass?
Kathy
01-06-2007, 08:24 AM
Okay, you asked....
No hives yet. I didn't take my third Wellbutrin last night, so I'll be taking just 2 today for a few days. The tingles are less and no longer on my ass. It's my neck and scalp. Like I need to scratch? Aggravating. I think the lesser dose will be the ticket. Thanks Dr. Tingles, er, Debbie!
I had gained 3 inches in my waistline. I lost 2 of them so far. I'm still 181.0. I can't seem to shake the extra weight that came on so quickly. Hubby said I'm definately eating more since I quit. Mostly it's vegetable soup, but I'm also nibbling on candy (peppermint patties, Candy Cane Kisses, Butterscotch, Green Peppermints are my trusty stand-by's) and he noticed more Wheat Thin and Cheese Ball Fests. I just don't know what to do about that.
Right now I'm wound up, and if I didn't pay attention and have the 'puter keyboard tray on me, my legs would be bouncing just from nervous energy. I'm scared to eat at all anymore. I'm scared to blow up llike a huge gas-filled balloon. My belly is huge and I'm awful gassy. Yesterday was terrible, I was so Rank.
I'm kind of miserable and scared and frustrated, actually. I don't know how to slap myself out of it. I can't just MAKE myself smile. I'm going to have to though. In order to do what you need to do, you don't wait until you feel like it, you do it, and THEN feel good. Someone write that in a way that makes sense.
Okay, thanks for asking, 503. I needed that vent. :)

01-06-2007, 08:55 AM
What about my other question of a fill? Do you think that that would help?
You can try some of those gasex strips that just melt on your tongue. That may help with your "rankness". I will leave any additional comments past that alone.....

VENT girl...that's why we're here.
As for jumpy rankness, I can relate. Currently for some unknown reason (despite the fact that I take an injectable and a fistful of pills) I am have some arthritis issues...my ankles knees and left hand are useless. The medicine I used to take has an adverse reaction for the first few days. Imagine a firehose, that pressure, that consistency, from a place where you were tingly. Add extreme pain when moving and walking and you have the makings of a disaster. The wife came home one day and I was sitting in a kitchen chair outside the bathroom watching TV. She asked what my malfunction was and I explained this was the maximum distance I can go and still make it to the toilet.
A fill won't help because you are grazing...thats what they call all those little candies, cheese and wheat thins...nice way to describe fat people....grazers. Ya just know some skinny jackass came up with that term. Anywho...get your hands busy, buy a little video game if you have to, anything to pass time when your hands are bored. I know you have little ones and they take up tons of your time, but that's where the grazing is coming from. Get healthier grazing materials...that helps too....carrots, celery and cucumber sticks...mmmm yummy.
While i'm rambling on and on, Deb said come visit...yeah...do it this way, swing past Fla, grab Deb and come on up here. I jump in the car and now we are off for a whats the word i'm looking for...its french...all three of us will be smiling....
Trois amis...thats it.
You thought I was going to say "menage a trois" didn't you? y'all got some dirty minds.
Kathy Hope you are tingly in a better way very soon.
