I spent half the day at the hospital. I have been feeling great, then today I started coughing like crazy and was having irregular breathing. I called the doctor and of course he said to go to the E.R. They did chest x-rays, blood work, and something was elivated, so they checked for a PE. Thank goodness everything is okay, I have some small vessels collapsing in my lungs.(there is a big word for this I just can't remember how to spell it ) just need to do my breathing more. So I am home and feeling better...what a day!

How freaky! I'm glad to hear that everything is going well for you now. I agree. Keep on using that spirometer. They seem like a pain in the butt, but in the end they really do help.

OMG I remember that thing! I HATED it! It hurt so much!
However! After surgery, especially surgery that invoves the abdominal area and makes the diaphram sore, we tend to take very shallow breaths because of the pain. This is why people end up with pneumonia after surgery. So, it is VERY important that we force ourselves to take in those deep breaths to open the lungs and keep the lung walls from sticking together. Coughing can be a sign of complications forming due to the shallow breathing.
So Tricial is RIGHT! Use the incentive spirometer! If you didn't get one, then simply sit up straight and breathe in as deeply as you can until you cough. Yes, I said until you cough. This will clear the lungs and help you get better faster!
