View Full Version : Protein shakes and Powers
My nutritionist suggest I start trying Protein shakes and Powers. Does anyone have a suggestion of what kind or a name of one. I need to find one that is not real expensive because I am on a fixed income. I have not been banded yet but working on it . I would be thankful for any suggestions

Call around to any health stores in the area. A lot of them will let you come in and sample the product prior to buying. This will ensure you don't waste money on a powder or shake that you dislike and can't return. I found a lot of the sales people extremely helpful-just don't let them try to sell you any diet drugs while you are there :)
I purchased my first Whey Protein Power today. I see this has 25 G of protein with 2G. of sugars. I seen some had 54 g. of protein. Can you get too much protein? I am not sure what I am doing.

I just purchased a sample pack from Syntrax. They are called Nectar and come in many flavors. They have lemonade, Iced Tea, Strawberry Kiwi, and many others. Each one is delicious and doesn't have the gritty protein "baby formula" taste! Google it and try it. The sample pack had twelve different kinds and only cost 10 dollars with free shipping!
I went on the Syntrax site they look good. Thank you for the help and Thanks to everyone for their help.

I have been to this shop. In my opinion they are too expensive. WalMart sells the Body Fortress protien (choc, vanilaa, cookies n cream) in a 2.2 lb tub for around $12. They taste pretty good. Again, in my opinion, the shake will taste as good as you make it. Example, if you don't care that much for the vanilla one, doctor it up. Add vanilla SF FF pudding mix to it. It adds vanilla flavor. Or add some vanilla extract. I like to do chocolate protien powder, mixed with water, ice, banana, and banana SF FF pudding mix. Man it tastes great and is very filling.

I just ordered more today from Unjury.com You can buy individule packets or the bigger tub. I think they tast great. I really like the chicken soup for something differant they also have unflavored and the usual chocolate, strawberry and vanella. They have a little started kit so you can try it out.
I love the Lean Dessert protein shakes myself.i think my husband orders theem from bodybuilding.com for me.

I like Whey Protein . . . Designer Whey Protein and you can purchase it through Amazon.com. The jug of power protein may be expensive at first but it lasts forever. When I made my Whey Protein drinks I blended it with frozen strawberries and soy milk.... heaven! I haven't been banded yet, either.

I have tried quite a few and my favorite is the natural flavored Ultimate Nutrition ProStar Whey Protein. They have a bunch of flavor options to choose from though. The natural is nice for me because it has little to no flavor itself and blends really well with just about everything.

I think these are from BSN, which is the same company that makes Syntha 6 protein. This one of the hottest and most popular protein mixes with bodybuilders right now. It contains a slow release proteins and is loaded with vitamins. Muscle Milk is real popular also, but for some reason it does not agree with me at all. Also, if your lactose intolerant try ISOPURE, high protien, low fat and low carbs.
Try this company out for good prices:

I struggled to find one that tasted good for most of my year banded. I finally found Matrix at the vitamin shoppe, its the best one by far...I love love the cookies and cream one. I also mix it with Hood Calorie countdown milk and that adds more protein without a lot more calories or carbs (45 cals for 8oz and 4 carbs) you can find the milk at any smith's or krogers.

I got some EAS at Harris Teeter it was not that expensive .My nutritionist told me to shoot for 20-25 grams of protein per serving .She told me to stay away from the ones that have like 40 or 50 grams b/c your body cannot process that much at once and it is actually harder on your liver and kidneys etc.

You know I just shopped around , found the cheapest one I could find that had about 25 gram of protein and lowest sugar. Just try a few out and find one you like. I use one called Elite----its cheap and taste ---well ok. Im not a big fan of the shakes really. Just have one for breakfast and then get the rest of my protein from the food I eat. I think your suppose to get something like 60 grams plus a day. I could be lying to you but I think thats right.

lol Greg - you - lie? Perhaps misquote but not lie...
and I have to say -- EVERY time I catch the title of this thread I laugh - and LOVE IT!!! I know it is supposed to be protein shakes and powders -- but I kinda love protein shakes and POWERS -- I feel like I have super powers when I use protein powder and vitamins EVERY day --- so hooray for power! :)
ok back to topic --
I have tried tons and tons of protein shakes and I'm happy enough with Wal-Mart's Body Fortress Whey Protein -- I found I can't do soy protein powder - the gas was killer! The stuff is pretty inexpensive and convenient - if I run out I just head to the nearest store...I also use GNC powder vitamins - a bit expensive - but the fiber alone is worth the payoff to me that I get from it
I love GNC's Lean Dessert but I think I get addicted to it - it never lasts long lol

Protein powders come in a huge variety of sizes and costs. I have a few that I "like" an I use that term loosely. I take the cost and divide by the number of servings to calculate the cost per serving. I have found that the smaller, cheaper containers are usually much more per serving than the larger more expensive containers.
I love the Lean Desserts, but they are higher priced when you look at it that way so I have switched back to the Optimum Nutrition double chocolate flavor in the huge container...it is the best value for the taste as far as my tastes go.
