View Full Version : OK, here's another question: Spitting in a cup???
OK, I'm back with another question. Since everyone here did such a great job answering my last question, I'm encouraged to ask another one.
I was reading a thread on the Lap Band Talk forum about spitting in a cup. Seems like most of the people who responded thought this was acceptable behavior. Excuse me, and I don't mean to offend anyone, but this does not seem normal to me. It actually seems kind of disgusting. Is this a normal side effect of this surgery? I certainly don't want to lose weight at the expense of good manners. Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings. I sincerely don't mean to do that. However, I have to be honest and say I won't have this surgery if it means I have to keep a cup and napkins in the car or carry a cup into restaurants for spitting. Please let me know if this is the case for any of you.
Thanks... Debi
I would like to know about this as well...it sounds sick! And I definitely don't want to be spitting in a cup all day. Is it a result of being overfilled??
Hi, Jessica. From what I can tell, I think it comes from being overfilled. Also, not chewing food well. Small bites, chewing well are under my control, so I'll manage that. I'm just wondering how you keep from getting overfilled. It sounds hit or miss. Can anyone clarify?
Thanks... Debi.

I have heard of those who go out to dinner prepared for those unexpected PBs. Some people have experienced a quick burp that brings up a bit of food that wouldnt go down, most likely because they didnt chew it well enough. Having a way to catch this kind of thing is probably a good idea, but certainly isn't something that should be an every day occurance. If someone is having to spit up food at every meal, they are definitely too tight and should get an unfill asap.
Some PB occurances are accompanied by a lot of "sliming". When food becomes stuck, the body begins to produce this slime spit to help lube things in an attempt to get the food to go on down. However, when the banded area of the stomach is blocked, even spit wont go through so it has to come out. Is that gross? Yes, but it does happen. And if it happens to you when you're out in public with no way to get to a bathroom or find a secluded place to take care of this in private.. well, I guess a cup or napkin would be a better alternative to the front of your clothes, the floor, or worse yet.. the plate in front of you! *laughs*
It is an unfortunate thing that does sometimes occur, even when we are doing our best to chew well and pick foods that won't be a problem. But, as I said, it should NOT be an everyday occurance.
Thanks for responding, Susan. Okay, so this is not suppose to happen all the time. Still sounds bad, but sounds like it's something that can be managed with careful eating and not being overfilled. I wouldn't want to live with anticipating it. You can live with almost anything once in a while, as long as it doesn't become a daily occurrence. An yes, Susan, it would be more disgusting to soil your blouse.

I have to say that spitting in a cup is a lot better then when I watched my BF who is also banded spew slime and water out of her nose because she didn't have a cup and couldn't get up quick enough.
I have learned to always be prepared by sitting close to ladies room, getting extra napkins, and yes have a cup handy... especially in the car.
