I've had my band for two years now and the last time I was filled was in February of 2009, almost a year. I just got over the swine flu. It was making me cough all day and night. I'm over everything else except the cough. Only at night and only after my husband can hear me gurgling when I breathe until I wake up and cough it all out. Reading other posts, I see that people have this problem after they've been recently filled. But since I haven't been filled for almost a year, I'm wondering if this is just the residuals of being sick or if I'm inflammed. I've had so few problems, I'm not sure when it's due to my band or not. Could really use some advice from anyone!

Mascs, everyone I know who gurgles and coughs up fluid (foamy) has done so from being too tight. I'm guessing you're irritated from being sick. I'd make sure you are drinking lots and lots of fluids and if it doesn't get better I'd suggest seeing your doc to get a tiny bit taken out. Hope you're feeling better!

What chrispy said....take care and get it checked out if being on liquids for a little bit doesn't fix it.

That was a symptom of my being too tight. I had to sleep propped up on pillows.
I had my last fill in Jan 2007 and needed to be unfilled in Sept 2009. Go figure. But, I certainly feel better.
I would check with your doc, too. Maybe a little needs to taken out. That doesn't necessarily mean it will be forever, but may be what you need to get better.

In my experience you will be in no confusion as to whether its simply phlegm or stomach contents you are gurgling. Both are characteristic, and disgusting as this sounds, that thick awful phlegm you get after a flu does have a taste to it and its thick and makes your breathing raspy and makes you gag, that is quite distinct to the sick-y taste of stomach contents. You gurgle those when they have come up and been breathed in, generally you wake suddenly coughing very urgently and definitely choking (its different to waking at night from a cough) and the sick taste will be there.
So if you're gagging a bit and cant shift it and it feels thick, its just phlegm, if you wake all of a sudden coughing desperately, and you can feel that its not just a cough, you've probably had some reflux.
It usually does mean you need fill out, but you have obviously been pretty sick so its more than likely related to that - stuff like post nasal drip can irritate your bamd - and it more than likely is nothing very serious and will resolve short term, perhaps with a small unfill for now.

I find that happens to me if I eat or drink too close to bed time. If I don't allow myself enough time for my "pouch" to empty before I lay down for bed, I have issues, otherwise I am good and don't think I am too tight. Not sure if this is the case for you, but worth a shot. On several occasions, I have woken myself up because I "spit-up" for lack of a better term in my sleep and choked.

Well Im no doctor but I agree with everyone here---You were sick and you r just getting over it so probably got your stomach alittle imflamed from being sick. I would go see your doctor -----better safe than sorry.

thanks for everyone's advice although it sucks thinking about having to get unfilled and then refilled just because I was sick. I'm sure that's what I'll have to do!
