Hello---I am wondering if there is anyone out there who is into weight training along with there cardio? I did something crazy last night and went and bought this complete home weight set. Spent like 800 dolars on this thing. Its pretty cool though--had like 400 lbs of free weights included with it, a squat machine, bench press, pullies the works. Anyway I have never been a weight lifter and know there is an art form to doing it correctly. Can anyone suggest a good book/ dvd on lifting weights? Probably wasnt the smartest thing to do--buying the weights first but oh well its already done. Anyway if someone has some good tips on finding good weight lifting resources I would appreciate it.
thanks---Greg K

Hey Greg! I have been told by nutritionist and a trainer that weight training is the best thing you can do to help weightloss! It might be worth hiring a trainer for a couple of sessions to show you how to use the weights. I know it's another expense, but it's a thought. I'm sure you can also find stuff online, although I've never looked.

I'd have a few sessions with a personal trainer. Its almost impossible, unless you have a detailed knowledge of anatomy, to really know what you're doing and how to do it unless you have someone to show you.

Greg, I spent a lot of time in the gym in high school, the best advice I can give is take it slow, use a weight lifting belt and keep it tight if your doing squats and really lifting / curling heavy weights. rule of thumb is if you want bulky muscles heavy weight fewer reps, if you want long and lean muscles lighter weights and more reps /more sets. just play it safe until you get a feel for it.

I agree, here. I think that a personal trainer would be a great investment for you. We have a Bowflex that we never use and it came with pictures on how to do several groups of exercises. So that was helpful.
I think weight training is excellent!!!
Greg,
I was a competitive power lifter in my 30's. Correct body alignment and correct form for the exercise is imperative to keep from injuring yourself and to keep you from wasting time by doing it wrong.
I strongly suggest you either go to a gym (many give free days) to learn the proper body mechanics, or have a personal trainer that specializes in strength training to come in and show you this equipment. It will cost very little compared to wasting the $800 by not using the stuff.
Good luck...I'm envious of your new equipment!

Good luck Greg. I hope it serves you better than all the excercise equipment I have bought over the years. Mine usually end up in the bedroom and are used to hang clothes on! lol

here is a decent site.. Plus do some searches for body building sites, they usually have beginner routines, that work well...

There are some books out there too. Hit a Barnes and Noble and take some notes. No need to buy if you don't want too.

Thanks everyone----Well I got to thinking about this yesterday and we have a gym here where I work and its free. So yesterday I went in and looked around and found the biggest muscled up guy there and just went and introduced myself. He told me It was a good thing to ask for advice on lifting because doing it the wrong way could hurt yourself. Anyway so Im going to workout with him for a few weeks. I figure a guy that muscled up must know what he is doing. He was real helpful. I think the guy is gay---Oh well I dont care. I talked about my wife alot. ha ha ha I know some people get all bent out of shape when they find out someone is batting for the other team and all but I always just try and treat people like that they way I would anyone else. I might not agree with them but that no reason for being cruel. He is helping me out big time.

Very smart Greg -- my son - who never works out - went to a "free" day but didn't have a trainer nearby and ended up hurting himself big time - he said but it was just a machine--well his elbows swelled so bad he has had to ice them for weeks! So definitely stick with having someone show you how to do the weight training!

Well, that's really nice of him to take the time to help you out. You dont often find people so accommodating these days.

Well its here at work and my name is known out here I guess. Im one of there area supervisors over the engineering dept. (that dont mean anything to you sorry) Im the boss in other words. At least until I get home and then the real boss takes over. :) Man I just have to say this. I woke up today and oh my Lord am I sore. I had to stretch to even extend my arms out fully. The guy Im working out with says the second day is actually the pain day. Its usually 2 days after a good workout that pain really sets in. If this is true tomorrow is going to suck. I am going to be lifting on monday wednesday and friday. Not doing it today though because the gym is closed.

Greg.. make sure you are stretching after your workout.. It will release the build up of lactic acid in the muscles and cut down on the soreness..
