Hi, I'm Taraza, and I fell by the wayside in my first year with the band. I had modest weight loss in the first 6 months I had my band. Then my mother died. It's been seven months since then. I regained everything I had lost, plus another 17 more. My health is tottering on the brink of collapse, but I find it very difficult to stop overeating. I had a huge problem with reflux which was making my asthma worse, and I was in the hospital twice with asthma and swine flu. (Not making this up--I had swine flu during the weeks of Sept. 15th-25.) I had to get unbanded to stop the choking I was having with reflux.

So here I am, finally willing to get with the program.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? To gain weight with the band?

What did you do to get back on the right track?

Thanks for listening.

Hey Taraza...
Yikes...such a chain of unfortunate events. I think it is a great first step to be back here.
Clarification: When you say "unbanded"... Did you get unfilled? or did you have the surgery to have the band removed entirely?

The thing with weight loss (with or without a band) is to make the committment to yourself. You must realize your value as an individual and then resolve to be the best that you can be. Then, I would say the next step is to visit with your doc and have him make suggestions to help you to 'get with the program'. Excessive reflux should not be a persistant problem if you are folowing the rules of both the band and of reflux...and should be managable to a large degree. If you are not following the eating guidelines you will have reflux and a number of other problems.

You can be a healthier version of you if you decide to do it... Read alot around this site...you will be inspired to succeed. Good Luck. You can do it!

Hi Tazara, thanks for posting your experience. I think there are lots of folks myself included that have struggled, have gained weight in the first or second year. For me, it reinforces the fact the lapband is a tool. We have to have the right conditions some we are responsible for and others we aren't. For example, you can't control the fact you got Swine flu. I'm glad to hear you recovered from it. You said you had to get your band undone. Does that mean you had the saline taken out or did you have to have the band removed. I agree, good first step being back here. Take it one day at a time and do the best you can.
